Gerrit's New Tank

Absolutely bloody awesome!

How is the pipes connected to the tank? I don't see any tank connectors.

Good to see Ryan doing his bit of heavy lifting...haha.

Thanks Galibore,

I'm making use of 2 x Tunze outlets. Very nice these since you get surface skimming as well as it draws from the bottom.

Ja, Ryan did more than his bit. These glass tanks are very heavy and difficult to handle. Real back breakers!! :hammer: I'm just glad it is in and in 1 piece!

I am not sure how I missed this thread. It is lookin great ! I think plenty of planning, as you have done, is the key to a good system.
Well done !

Thanks Smithers,

I've read u're post about your setup as well and it brought back a lot of memories of my first marine tank about 5 years ago. Also advice from a local LFS and they also had not a clue about marine setups. Wish I had back then access to a forum as this one. Would have saved me a lot of trouble and $'s.

Gerrit

I know what you mean. The amount of crap I had at home at one stage I think I could have set up four or five tanks.
It is an expensive learning curve if anything. Least I know what to do with my new tank (getting a 1.6M tank). Closed loops, overflow boxes etc.
If a petshop wants to sell marine equip. and fish they should be forced to join a forum like this.

Hi Gerrit...

How did you paint the wooden stand of the tank..Did you use wood stain and then varnish?

Also, Did you spra the stand or did you use a paintbrush?

Mekaeel, not yet, will take some photos as soon as I start putting in the live rock.

Ridwaan, I've used Woodoc 55 - Exterior Gloss Sealer (dark brown) and applied 4 coats with a brush.

Some updated pictures. Received the Fiji Live Rock from EcoAquatics (thanks Andrew). Some realy nice big pieces. Please comment/suggest on my AquaScaping. Not an easy thing to do especially if one is working from behind the tank.

First rocks in (Kenia Live Rock from old tank)

Some of the Fiji Rock pieces:

The in tank photos was difficult to take because there is currently no light on the tank.

Right hand side

The left hand side is kept low because there is some more rock pieces with LPS on them that will go on there:

Very nice rock, see you going BB, are you going for SPS dominated tank?

Nice rock Gerrit

If I may suggest, and I know it's difficult working at from the back but try and open up the scape on the right hand side. The way the rocks are "piled" at the moment will lead to detritus settling between them and hinder flow.

hi
looks very nice. when you going to add the coral to the bottom, are you going to add fine sand or go for a more corse bottom.
keep up the photos so we can see how it progresses

Alan, yes, the plan is to go SPS dominated. I have not kepted them before, so lots to learn from you experts! ;)
For at least the first few months, it will be BB. Will then decide if I want to put in some sand.

Anthony, although you can't see it on the photos, the rocks are barely touching the sides and back. Out of all that rock, probably 5 of them is touching the glass. I've made sure there will be enough flow around them. I'll try and take a photo from above.

Thank Peter, the tank is going to cycle now for 4 - 6 weeks, after which I will move the final rocks and LPS from my old tank. Will only decide later on if I'm going to add fine sand to the bottom.
