Hi all

I’d like to get some advice on fish feeding. How often is ideal and what quantity? I’ve kept freshwater tanks for many years and my rule of thumb has always been a daily feed, not more than the fish can consume in 2-3 minutes. Not sure if same applies to marine? Might be a really stupid question but haven’t seen any advice on this anywhere.

It depends on the fish you are keeping. Some fish such as anthias likes to be fed smaller feeds multiple times per day as they have small stomachs. But I have kept them with only 1 feed per day. I also do a single feed per day which is consumed within a few minutes. My main reason for 1 feed is that I leave the house early in the morning while the fish are still in hiding/ sleeping, so any food dropped in at that time will only feed the nutrient levels and not really the fish.

Your routine posted is fine but it also depends on the fish that you want to keep. Something like an anthia that needs regular feedings throughout the day would require more than one meal daily.

EDIT: @mariusmeyer has a faster internet connection than I

I feed twice a day. The lights come on at 6 in the morning. I leave at about 6:20. So they get an early morning breakfast. The fish must wonder what is happening on a Sunday morning when I do sleep in a bit.
