DSB curing time

I started my dsb recently and seeded it with sand From Sean Koekemoer plus a bit from my old tank. How long should it take for the dsb to start working?

It varies from system to system. It will start working almost immediately, but for it to reach its full potential can take up to four months. Dependat on factors such as bacterial density to start with, bioload, nutrient load, husbandry practises, etc.

Agreed - it also depends to a large extent on how much predation there is in the tank. Remember, a deep live sand bed absolutely requires a large population of worms and other sand-living critters to create a continuous slow water movement through the sand - without these critters the sand bed will work very well for a while, but it will ultimately crash.

The best way to start a deep live sand bed (if it's in the tank...) is to run the tank without any fish, crabs or shrimp for 3-4 months. this will allow a sustainable population to establish. Of course, even after this time, it is always important to be selective with your fish population - a single wrasse can kill even an established sandbed.
