I have been running a Reef tank for 4 years now and never experienced any major loss of fish stock.
In January, I suddenly lost about 12 of the 16 fishes in the tank within a 3 day period.
I had installed fly repellant sprays in November the previous year, but nowhere close to the tanks. Is it possible that the majority of the fish died in such a short time span after 3 months because of the fly repellant? I also run a predator tank, which was unaffected.
Please can someone help shed some light as to possible causes.

hi samdj, welcome to masa.

very sorry to hear of your losses after all that time i am sure you were very attached to those fish.

its tough to guess with so little info, could you perhaps give us some specs and pics of the tank. For it to be that rapid it has to be some large environmental change, is it possible you had a power outage and a loss of oxygen? any guess is a dart in the dark at the moment, maybe we can help more with some better info.

welcome to masa :)

Firstly, welcome to MASA - it is just sad that you join under these circumstances. For us to assist you we need to know a bit more about your system. Things like filtration and water parameters are very important.
Can you fill us in and post pictures? Also what other livestock you have and what was added last, etc
What changed since January, meaning did you add anything else like live rock, dosing certain things, etc

Hi, No changes to any part of the system was made. The tank is approx 800l with large sump filters, skimmers etc. I can look up parameters but did not record any meaningfull change in nitrates etc. No new additions in the last 3 months before the loss.
Lighting is two quad T5's.
Most of the corals and three large clams all survived. Two percular clowns and carpet anenomy also survived as did the young snowflake eel, the old boxer shrimp and the maroon clown and hermit crab in the sump.

Hello and welcome. It could be the fly repellant. I have heard of someone killing their fish because of one of those air fresheners that go off every half hour

Welcome to MASA ! Sorry to hear about your losses ! :(
