So I figured I would play with my little 'point 'n shoot' camera this evening but nothing exciting was happening so I got this humongous brainstorm......stick the lens in the water, ala millepora style :p

Your head in the way!!!

Same corals, different apparent colour.
What was different in pic conditions,
Which lights were on/off?

Or was your head in the way of light?
...again

BTW Algae rearing it's head in your tank again, I see.

:D leave my head out of this :p One was with flash and one was without, no other difference, lit by 3 x 54w T5's.

Slight bit of bryopsis, but it's only in the frag tank, as soon as I get a magnesium test kit I am going to sort out that stuff once and for all, but it's very little and quite manageable.

Dean, if you say you stick the lens in the water, is it in a waterproof bag of some sort????? Btw, like the Colt
 
I like the coralline algae one especially. Cool :)

Nope, just dunk the lens in the water, about half a cm under the water surface. DO NOT TRY THIS, it may irreversibly damage your camera. I only tried it because it's a cheapie camera, but I must say some of the shots came out very nice, totally different than shooting through glass.

Immediately after putting the lens in the water I then put it in normal tap water to remove the salt and dried it as much as I could, still working perfectly this morning, but I must emphasize, DO NOT TRY THIS.

Ya I’ve been using this method for a few years now, best way to take top down pics as there is no glare or reflection on the surface of the lighting etc. It is risky to the camera though.
 
Wow! those are stunning pics.

I was just tinking, instead of throwing the camera away every time you do this, would you not get the same results if you put some cling wrap over the lens , and camera if nessesary.

Was thinking in the same direction Bob, or Ziplock, sealed tight with some Sisolation tape...
 
Possibly, but never tried as I thought the pics would not be as clear or the macro will focus on the plastic.
After two years plus of doing this to my camera it is still working fine, so no need to gooi weg!!
 
WOW! Unbelievable! Dean - really nice pics - seems like you don't need Heline's Olympus water-proof camera!

Can we please pics of the actual cameras you guys are using (Dean/Andrew)?

I would just LOVE to see what you guys call "cheapie camera's"..... :whistling:

My idea of a "cheapie digital camera" means that it does not have an extension to the lens - the lens is basically FLUSH with the camera body - if I had to try this, I would have to dunk the WHOLE camera into the water...

Then again - if I REALLY wanted to, I would just use my diving underwater housing..... hhhhmmmm - perhaps I should..... Just a LOT of effort removing the lights from the top of my tank though...
