2una's Rsm 650 mixed reef

SUPER NEWS DUDE... Worth giving it a second treatment to make sure?

I'll wait & see if they come back Vleis - i've been hard on the tank - i also had bryopsis i just got rid of before i dosed this + been throwing weirdo stuff in there to attempt to knock back whatever is causing the stn/rtn so shes long overdue a break ,

i should mention with that dosage i done i did knock out some snails otherwise no problems...it is known to kill xenia/gsp/gorgs tho, sps + chaeto no effect

Okay cool beans. Yeah let the tank chill a bit. You gonna do some BIG WC’s?

No i think the carbon will pull it back out & anything remaining should just discourage those polyp creeps from raising their heads. I do the fluconazole for the bryropsis he same way , once carbons back in & the skimmer back up running as normal i think it pulls what it needs to back out anyway. I really haven't done any much water changes for 6 months or so, just icp-ing & dosing.

Had 4 x OW10's up on my back wall - swapped them out today for something with a bit more wider flow
These are the SLW 20's

Looks like they should be pretty easy cleaning with the wide-ish grating, seem to blend in & not stand out too bad.
They have a extra concave rubber to use so you can angle them around a bit too, For the back wall more than enough angle to play with.

They only new grasshopper so will have to see but generally like them so far. Can sinc 2 together so one runs, one off, visa versa, i like that with the jebaos for randomish flow.
That front guard is pretty open for nennies/fish to stick their nose in but will have to see on that.

I have recently moved back to durban. Wondering which marine shops you use in kzn as I used to frequent northlands pets years ago, but was shocked at how it has deteriorated and will not be going back there. Is there any good places left?

Hi, No not really....Northlands is a desert,Hillcrest Pets is better for having some floor stock, once a month maybe a little live stock, there is also Something Exotic pets out there that are recently moving or moved & vpretty similar deal to Hillcrest. In Durban Marco/Waterboy has some stuff there or can get. For livestock+ floorstock your best bet is probably Aquatics for Fanatics, i'm pm you his number, they Durban north way.

Shucks a pity. Used to love going to check out the stocks and stuff. Oh well. Thanks for the feedback

I don't know the Durban shops but I buy from time to time from reef maniacs. Have no idea we're they are. Think Bluff side

Found out the other day the Triton rtn-x / stn-x product is a bacteria based warrior so giving that a try now.
Already tried 1.5L the Fauna Marin rtn/stn product & that was a waste of time.
Done a lot of biodigest to try outcompete it - it goes quiet for a while where you think you've beaten it but only for it to return & nail something new. This i thought it was immune but nope.

Whole report here https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/triton-stn-x-impact-on-microbiome.715059/
but tldr 1 guy managed to do a before & after bacteria test on his tank & it seems the triton product was pretty selective in what it knocked out.
Surprizingly not so much the Vibrio either.

Guys if any of you are using redsea pro test kit for Po4 it might be time to check with something else.
i had 2 kits -1 nearing expiry & i had brought another new one to check the older one was still telling the truth
Both have been telling me 0.09ppm Po4

Hadn't done an icp for close to a year & they just threw 0.5 estimated Po4 at me - got them to recheck the reading which they did & reported same.
I check now with an Elos kit i don't use much & its also agreeing with what ATI are saying.

So anyway might be worth a check with something else if that's what your using

In my journey to pull my tank back together i decided to shutdown my carx for awhile & go back to dosing, mostly to crawl out of the low pH it brings.
Decided to give the Aquaforest component 1-2-3 a try but even with the tank nowhere near sps levels what it was i am doing 230ml a day which makes a 5L container not go too far when one works away.
Then i stumbled across NaOH - Sodium Hydroxide, kalks other brother (Calcium Hydroxide) & it also brings a pH boost with it.

Yet to see if this will work like it hopefully should but switching the Component 2 part of Aquaforest to this should get me to halve the 230ml/day me thinks.

Original recipe for 5L
AF 123 mix recipe for 5L mix.JPG

Trial recipe with changing the comp2 & doubling the comp1+3

Didn't dissolve my fingers mixing up the brew as one needs to be careful as its caustic soda one is playing with so i decided to feel lucky & offer them to my trigger instead.

Been on the NaOH recipe for 3 weeks now - pH results below - have also turned off the 2.7L kalk i was dosing.......I still have a co2 scrubber on the skimmer & you can see its in the last 2/3 days getting into exhausted level with the lower pH low showing.
Did an icp & i don't see any signs of anything bad showing up but it is AR grade NaOH i'm using not caustic from Builders.
Dosing line i needed to stick under the water or else it was going to clog & also needed to add a small pump in the dosing area else precipitate was forming.
Fiddled with the recipe a little after posting the above to now make up a mix that take's the whole bottle of the Strongs(trace) in a 5L+ container.

End 2021 fts - work in progress but slowly winning.....I THINK the Triton Rtn-x product finally kicked in the pants my tn issues (touch wood)

Some interesting info if you sps guys ain't came across this one yet, think its time to maybe take a stab at that treatment.
Sheldon/ JC you guys haven't maybe brought any in your sitting on? @Atilla @Marine Aquatics @Achilles

I've previously seen this issue & with @irie ivan thumbsucked it was maybe Vibrio pathogen that comes & goes but maybe this is more likely what it is.
With a weakened/damaged tank this kak just won't f off...is like fighting a ghost
Hi Captain John
Its been a while!!
Sorry to see you hit a bump in the road on a beautiful tank.
Good to see things are heading in the right direction.
Have spent many brief moments thinking about our chats back then and am pleased to see there has been some progress by the clever people.
Was actually reading up on Philaster lucinda and their ciliates non grata cohorts earlier.
