Hey Guys, me again..... what substrate is used in a carbon reactor, is it the same carbon that is used in a freshwater aquarium? and would the intake also be after the protien skimer?

Hi Nico - you use activated carbon that does not contain phosphates, or otherwise, carbon that it touted for use with marines. Not normal fresh-water carbon - this leaches phosphates, that can cause nuisance algae to grow!

You mean media instead of substrate I presume? I use normal GAC (Granular Activated Carbon). The intake can be after the protein skimmer.

GAC is fine, and yes my preferance is after the Skimmer, infact my skimmers are the first line of filtration to remove most of the gunk and so lowers the load on all the other filtration.

a good brand to use is Maxizorb carbon.i think eco aquatics stock it,i use it,and in 24 hours i immesdiatley notice a difference.water is crystal clear
