Tiger Eye's 4ft adventure.

Hi guys, the tank is up and running. I transferred all the live stock today and water and the sand. Now I am struggling to get the overflow silent. I did put a durso in and covered the overflow with perspex but I'm still getting a very loud waterfall noise.

Have the same problem with my DT at the moment ... at the moment I've put a grid at the bottom, and some filter wool inside the overflow. That damped the loud waterfall noise by about 50%.
My next step is to "try" and put a valve on my 50mm outlet (don't think there's enough space though :()
That way I can limit the flow and thus let the water level rise inside the overflow, so that the water maybe fall just 1 - 5 cm in the overflow (at the moment it's falling around 30cm) ...
Nice lighting setup you've got there by the way ;)

on my 4foot tank I had a lot of noise with overflow aswell as the uplift pump was very strong..added a t piece to piping between pump and tank and diverted some flow back into sump..helped alot

I'm struggling with the aquascaping since 98% of my corals are fixed to the LR and I have very little base rocks that dont have corals attached to it. But here is a picture of it so far.

Hi HaroldF. Thanks man. Do you have a durso standpipe in your overflow? The filter wool idea sounds interesting. Do you have a picture perhaps?
Nope ...no durso stand pipe ... By limiting my downflow to the sump, I will actually combat 2 problems I have at the moment:
First problem ... water falls 30cm in the overflow.... after that it goes down a 50mm pipe and fals quite violantly in the sump ... causing 1. LOTS of noise, 2. LOTS of micro air bubbles..
So I'm limiting my pipe down to 25mm ... that in turn will cause the level in my overflow to rise (if it doesn't rise it enough, I'll use a durso standpipe). This will cause the water to hopefully fall only about 1 or 2 cm in the overflow, plus from the reducer to the sump, a 25mm hose will deliver the water straight to the bottom of the sump, with virtually no freefalling water anywhere ... that should almost totally eliminate the sound problem as well as the micro bubble problem ... the filter wool will be moved down to one of the sump compartments, as it's a slep to try and get the wool out of the overflow when it needs to be changed ..

I like it when I see some of my ideas implemented by other members. The overflow pipe silencer, how is it working for you?

Hi RiaanP, yes I do listen when I visit you. :tt2: The silencer is working fantastic and no more salt spray in the sump. But now I don't know where to put my Bio-Cubes. They were directly under my down pipe. I'm not ceen on the bom method. That means adding a extra device that uses power.

those air pumps do not use a lot of power. But if you are running low on plug points, then that could be an issue.

Jip I still have the ATU that has to be installed and the sump light I'm running out of power sockets. Can I perhaps put the Bio-Cubes inside the silencer? Or will it gather to much detritus?

I've got my bio-cubes in one of the narrow compartments where there is just flow coming through from bottom to top ...

That narrow flow compartment next to the Skimmer ... if you flatten out the bag with the cubes in it, will it fit in there? .. That's where I've got mine, but my flow compartment is a little bit bigger than the one you've got ...
