it seems the earlier versions of skimz had alot of problems, i am concerned because both of my magnets were coated with the white plastic and i am not sure what the "new improved" magnet looks like, incedently i tried to fire my pump up and its dead aswell. it was extreemly hot when i discovered the impellor was stuck and not producing bubbles so perhaps its burnt out due to the lack of waterflow through the unit which cools it??. I have mailed Janet at skimz to see what can be done..
 
Just double check the well of the stator for score marks and damage. If damaged, it could work but put iron and or copper into your tank via electrolysis.

Notice the Eheim vs Eden Pump, very curious, looks as if the ES5000 is an Eheim Ripoff : the actual Eheim has a 3 year warrantee. chect this out http://www.eheim.de/eheim/inhalte/index.jsp?key=liniendetail_28394_ehen

I wouldn't call the Eden an Eheim ripoff...

The Eden pump is actually an OEM product which is manufactured by Eden for other companies, such as Eheim and Tunze.

This Eden pump is also known as an Eheim Compact Plus and Tunze Recirc 1073.


Probably one of the best compact and energy efficient pumps available at the moment...

my argument is this the Eheim compact NW Skimmer Pump has a factory 3 year garrantee, and we all know Eheim pumps are good, if Eden is made by the "same" then why is it faulty? What went wrong?

But before who makes who, the my main reason here is this:
1, to find a solution for the Faulty ES5000, or
2, to either find a suitable replacement/mod for the skimmer.

The Eheim pump is the Eden pump. Eden will sell the pump with a basic 1 or 2 year guarantee but when it is branded under something else, the guarantee falls with the brand it is now associated with. Eheim will extend the manufacturers warranty as all of their products carry this length of service. Skimz did not extend the warranty, this is the only difference.

The solution already exists... Eden/Skimz are supplying a new version of the impeller.

The only problem is that Leslie can't find a comparison picture between the two to determine what version 2 looks like to confirm whether he is given the correct impeller.


You could buy the needle wheel impeller supplied with the Eheim version of this pump.

personally i would replace the ES5000 with the Eheim version, after a lot of Goole-ing, it seems that the first impellor had the bare Magenet black visable, the new impellor has a white "bearing" plastic coating on it.

Interesting developments in this thread, but if that is the new impellor pictured I'm afraid I have had 2 and they both ruptured,

So I'm not sure we are getting anywhere with warranty cliams if this is what they are going to replace it with. Why would the impellor go in the firstly place? Was it just a bad quality magnet used?

that is my belief, with what has happend with you Leslie, and why i'm so concerned, having a SM202 myself.
 
I got a new ceramic bearing with the new impellor, these impellors shouldent wear to chafing as they are centered by s plate which locks the impellor into the insert.

I actually googled the vid I posted to find out how to open/remover and reposition the new impellor. Did exactly as shown and six months down the line I'm doing it again.

As pretty as this skimmer is I'm over it. I can't even honestly sell it now even if I get a pump/impellor replacement.
 
ok well i dont actually think a replacement of impellor is going to be the answer as i am convinvced i have had 2 of the "new" impellors.
@Adam Scott can you perhaps provide a pic of the ones currently in the skimmers you have imported?

im worried that there will be no difference and hence no solition..

this is my impellor, in all fairness it has been out of the water 10 days including today so some oxidadtion would have occured due to the metal being laced with saltwater and being exposed to the atmosphere.

bearing is still in perfect condition and so is the area wherin it seats, no visible wear to the eye and i cannot get a deep down photograph...
 
Yup. That was the cause of the second impellor going the way it did. My guess is that the first impellor damaged the stator and damaged the second impellor.

Push for a complete pump replacement.

on closer inspection i see this pic has no flange below the pin wheel section

so maybe there is hope..

oh and if you thinking the impellor was abraded by the worn impellor shaft, it was smooth as a baby's bottom when i put the replacement impellor in, i checked it for wear.. the origionation of the rust seems to come from the top of the impellor? perhaps why they have removed the black flange?
