Nano Competition

Why should the addition of a calcium reactor or chiller mean a nano tank is no longer a nano tank?

I think for the sake of making the completion more interesting and allowing more people to enter, don’t limit the tank size to 100 liters and under. 150 liters with a possible 200 liters total including sumps, fuges ect. opens up the door considerably and yet is still in the small tanks category.
If people want to be technical/picky, then change the competition name to Small Tank Competition or something similar. Just a thought.
I hope you dont think I am being picky, but nano by definition means very small. :)
Lets have another competition for various other total volumes?

Well if you take Andrews advice then I'm in if not then I'll sit on the sidelines and watch :)

The idea with the nano competition is that you actually set up a tiny tank. Most of us likely have a small tank of some sort lying around. It's generally to try and make it within everyones reach, even newbies or friends of reefkeepers etc. The idea is not to have people enter their small "full on" tanks with everything. For the guy with a "small tank" with all the bells and whistles the prizes aren't going to mean much anyway. With this in mind I don't think it would be a good idea to increase the size limit. (just my thoughts, nothing "official")

ill have my 100l running by feb ! does it have to be mature? or not?

I agree with Rod. We should try and stick to the definition of a nano. IMHO the art of keeping a nano is to do it by making use of as little equipment as possible.

BTW I'm in !!!

"A nano reef is a type of Marine aquarium, a reef tank of less than 20 gallons. The exact limit that distinguishes a nano reef from a regular reef is somewhat ill-defined (some claim that anything less than 40 gallons would qualify), but 20 gallons seems to be the generally accepted limit."

I still feel nano should be less than 40g not 20g

I have no problem if it stays at 100 liters or less, my concern was really that I thought there wouldn’t be enough entries, I’m glad to see that there are already more people in this category than I thought which is great. Hope we get a lot more.
I like Rory’s opening line of the competition encouraging more people to set up a Nano.

Copper, why do you think a nano should be run with as little equipment at possible?

So are you setting one up milepora? ;)

Calvin it doesn't have to be mature but I'm sure that the sooner you start the better chance you will have of it looking awesome when voting time comes.

As for the little equipment as possibly the general idea from nano-reef.com is that you have live rock for filtration and do lots of water changes. Almost "calfo style" :p This system worked fairly well for me when I ran my 35L nano. Evaporation was not a problem as it was a closed jebo tank. I'd say I was fairly succesful with softies and LPS (except a sun coral, mistake for a nano I think unless you doing 50%/day type water changes).

So yeah, literally go find a small tank, move some live rock into it, fill with water from main tank, add heater and powerhead and possibly some carbon and some softies and see how it goes.

Must we post pics of our nanos here or under our own thread?

Hi,

Just to clarify please, do we just go and start a thread in Nano section, do we need to call it something with the word comp in? Do you need info on everything that we have in the tank? Equipment, livestock etc? From when can we start it?

Thanks

Hey Dory, you must start a thread on your tank in the nano forum, the link is in the first post of this thread. Try to put in as many photo's as you can and as many details about the tank that you can, remember, the members will be deciding who the winner is, so make your thread the best you can.

avdp, don't worry about a special name for your thread, we will find it and rename it when the time comes ;) You can start anytime you want to, as long as it is done before 14 Feb.

It will also be a good idea to bump your thread every week or two with a new pic or something in order to remind the members about your tank :)

come come anrew I wanto win!! where is my nano?

All threads for the competition will have [NCE] (Nano Competition Entry) as a prefix (the mods will add the prefix) and those threads will be made as a sticky for the duration of the competition.
