Fragging a leather

There are many ways to proceed ,but I would say for first time fraggers use the pie-cut method.

There are also many ways to attach the frag ,here again I use the one which works well for me ,but be aware that there are many options available to you.

Very nice zookeeper, thanks :thumbup1:

Have you just done this? Any idea roughly how long it takes for the frags to attach?

Excellent just one thing I would add. Let the frags and mother colony stand in a bucket of tank water for about 10 minutes. Rinse well in same water then add to frag tank, etc.

Viper ,I have done this many times.I took the pics the other day after I saw this thread. The frags attach very quickly ,three weeks is more than enough time.I feel that the sooner we remove the net the better.Sometimes one or two will still be loose but it`s no problem just wrap them up again .Hill why would you want to make things more complicated ,I always just get them back into the tank with minimum fuss.

Have you ever had any of the frags accidentally grow onto the fishnet while waiting for them to attach to the rock?

It sometimes happens,If you watch the frags you will see that they start to swell and plump up after 3-4 weeks.Thats a good indication that they have attached to the base.If you leave them wrapped after this stage that is when the start to get stuck to the net.Still it`s no problem just carefully pull the fishnet off.It leaves a funky print behind but after a few days you can`t notice.

ok, cool, thanks.

I thought you knew all about the perils of wearing fishnets Dean?

Just a precaution really. When cut leathers as most corals release slime. This can be toxic to other corals. Adding the extra steps just reduces the amount of slime going back into the display.

For those people who are afraid to try this, relax I have never had a single piece not make it.Expect a 100% sucsess rate.

I was asked if the size of the cuttings makes a difference, well the simple answer is that a larger cutting is going to make a bigger coral in far less time.So you must decide for your self.A good size is around the size if a matchbox, but I have even cut as small as 10mm x 10mm. Good for nano`s but remember that they will eventually reach their full size.

Amazing how life adapts in the ocean. Shred a coral to pieces and it just keeps growing. Thanks for the pics zookeeper.

I had a look at the frags tonight and decided it was time to remove the net.You can see how nice and swollen the base section has become,a sure sign that the frag is attached to the rock.
