Dry rot?

Hi all,

The base of my Kenyan tree appears to be changing colour/rotting/dying....

The base started changing as it attached itself to the rock but now it seems to be continuing up the trunk. Am I being paranoid or is this not a good thing??

me thinks you have a prob, speak to the gurus, i think you might need to frag it
 
If it was me I would slice it about 1 cm above the dark area and allow it to attach to another rock somewhere.
 
I would also think about removing the rotting piece. It may be contagious.
 
Some more detail on slicing/fragging please...I am assuming that I use a sharp blade and just cut straight through the trunk? Do I need to remove it from the tank to do this as this would mean digging out quite a bit of my LR?
 
Sorry Hill, posted whilst I was writting - guess that answers my question about having to lift it out the tank!
 
Is the flesh in the area all flakey and rotton? If not it looks like the foot where it attaches, if you are worried frag above the hard part about 1cm and leave the original foot in place, you may end up with 2 kenya trees.
 
If the flesh in the area is rotting then remove from your system.
 
Well you could just twist it and rip it off, but the best way is to use a sharp smooth blade (not serrated) and make one single cut right through. I do it in the tank (probably not advisable though) then just place the whole coral somewhere else in the tank, it will attach itself after a few days.
 
Hi Allan, Just been to check and the trunk is still firm. Feels the same as the base where it is attached to the LR. Nothing seems to come off when I rub it either.
 
Thanks Viper, pretty much thought that brute force was not teh way to go!:) Will have a bash and cut it, leave the base in place and see what happens....another good test of how long I can be patient!
 
Don't tell anyone but I just get a good grip and rip it off, couple of weeks later there's a new one growing there.:whistling:

Now which idiot showed you that method.
Kevin if the base is still firm with no rotting flesh, then its all good. You can slice it and have 2 kenya trees in a few months. It is better to do the fraging out of the tank if possible. Remember the coral will go into sulk mode for awhile after you cut it.
 
I wouldn`t worry, try placing a rock close by so it touches the stem and i`m sure he`ll attach to that soon enough. The polyp extention is good so the coral is healthy. By the way it doesn`t look like a kenya tree to me but some kind of cladiella or other softie.
 
Hi Midas, thought it was a Capnella but have not put too much effort into checking the ID. I will have a closer look.
 
I wouldn't do anything, I think its quite healthy, and unless you want to frag it to get more, leave it, its happy.

These guys can be quite a mission to resettle and if they don't , could easily dissolve, think a little before chopping it up.
