Wonder if some members can shed some light for me. I recently saw bio balls at a petshop and bought a whole bunch of the stuff and added it to my sump. I actually don't know what the stuff do. I tried reading some threads from 20years ago but to me it looks like bio balls are only good for the first part of the nitrogen cycle.

My thinking when i bought the balls were the more stuff i can add to my sump the more surface i will have for bacteria to grow, resulting in less po4 and No3. But I have no clue if im right or wrong.

Maybe the stuff just float around doing nothing.....lol

yes, they only do the first parts of the nitrogen cycle.
But every little part helps. As long as you got other methods in place to complete the cycle it should help.

Only part I do not know, how far apart could these separate portions of the cycle be from each other, to be still effective. Or does that not matter.

I'll just leave them in and see what happens with tank. I don'thave any ammonia or Nitrite so they might be just floating around.
