Lets see your sound

£$%^&* now you guys have started a new itch :nono:

My one speaker has picked up some damage some time ago (there should be a warning about playing Pink Floyd when over the legal limit !!!) and I have been toying with the idea of replacing them.

As posted way back on page 1 of this thread, I have two ARD Time Window speakers, each driven by a 50W Rotel amplifier in bridged mono configuration (i.e. 100W true RMS).

Please suggest affordable, good quality "audiophile" speakers which would be suitable for this system.

Hi Hennie - Unfortunately I am not TOO familiar with ARD speakers. BUT, I must say that I would personally look at either JBL or Celestion speakers.

BUT, that's me. These are not TOO expensive, but are not "run-of-the-mill" quality either - I would think that both these brands deliver exceptional quality.

You say you have 2 Rotel Amplifiers! WOW! Now THAT is something "special"!

Mark - I just had a chance (for the 1st time) to really look at your equipment. WOW! Now that is really "specialist audio" stuff that you have, mate! I think that the cost in slightly more than double the range I am in! ;)

Denon is a great amp they also do a monster pre amp

I would need to have a listen to all of them me thinks.

I just need to pre amp part

Mark - I just had a quick look. The Integra looks really good too. But, I don't know the brand.

I would preferably (personally) go for either another Yamaha or Denon, though. But, that's me hey! ;)

I've used/had 'Polk Audio' speakers for a very long time, driven them with Rotel, Yamaha and lately Onkio (spelling ??) amps (change in amps due to theft - bliksems).
These are very capable speakers and can handle harsh punishment very well.
Nice, clean and punchy sound without giving you that lazy booming slow bass sound some of the cheaper speakers would, I'l say the sound is a cross between KEF and Boston with some added bass.
They would work well with your Rotel amps, some of the Polk Audio models even come with a disclaimer saying they are not responsible for any damage to your hearing - PR I know, but still....
The catch????
Polk Audio is not as eficient as other makes meaning your amp works harder (and gets hotter) then with other speakers, this again has an impact on low volume listning, but push your amp past the 25% mark and these Polks will amaze you.

The Ears never lie :) the best is to listen & then buy the ones that sound best to you.

I like the sound of the new Yamaha Amp vs my old one the new one is much brighter which is great for movies not brilliant for music.

The Integra is the Lexus of Toyota - it's made by onkyo which is at the same level as Yamaha & Denon.

I am going to take my own advise & listen to all of them before I buy

I am an Old Krell AMP owner which was really just in another class

Hennie, have a look at the Energy Range of speakers. I am really happy with them. And they do not distort. Good quality for a good price:

A short "extract" from the next link:

On "No Excuses" the drums were a bit more prominent and the sound was a little warm through my NAD C372. When I switched to the Simaudio Moon i5.3 integrated amplifier there was even greater clarity in the highs and the whole presentation became more focused. Essentially the noise floor dropped and detail emerged from the shadows. This demonstrated that with a more detailed amplifier the RC-70s are able to sound equally detailed. I wished I still had the Bryston B100 SST on hand to pair it with the Energy speakers. I imagine the transparency and power would have been downright addicting, However the NAD/Energy combination worked very well together and made listening a memorable experience.

My advice to potential buyers of the RC-70s would be to spend money on quality electronics to extract everything they have to offer. They can sound very good with budget gear, but their performance was elevated as the quality of the upstream components improved. The RC-70s are certainly revealing. When fed a signal that is as refined as they are, the result is so impressive that one might forget all about upgrading and simply get on with just listening to music. If this isn't the point of being an audiophile, I don't know what is.

And the Link if you really wanna know the difference in different types of music played with some Amps:

nice topic, but sound is all relative to the person and the application...
for example i have a set of tannoy near field monitors which only sound good at ear level and directly in front of you.
i have been in the music business for years and my old man has had recording studios for 40 years and we have several speakers that cost R10000+ and sound worse then a headphone in a tin can, but they produce great live rock in the recording studios, it all depends on the application

so for the true audiophiles they will understand this :)

having said that, i have a great valve amp and tag mclaren speakers for those loud jazz nights

  • 18 Gauge
  • gold plated pins

  • Dual twist oxygen free copper and oxygen free nickel plated conductors ensure superior signal transfer for improved sound clarity and deeper bass
  • 24 K gold plated speaker pins resist corrosion and ensure maximum signal transfer
  • Pre-terminated - no installation required
  • Color coded grips for accurate connections

Speaker cables are snake oil all the way - speak to any electronic engineer the cable resistance is what makes the cable work.

so depends on length & Impedance

What one should worry about more is the older we get the worse our hearing is which is more important than a cable ;)
