hi Im getting my Boyu 550 tomorrow + live rock

It is my 2nd marine tank (first one is about 250l)

Can anyone plz explain to me what I should do to make the filter more effective, I have heard that I should chuck all the stuff I get with away... then what should I put back there.:001_huh:

I am also looking for Live Sand (CaribSea) Anyone know where I can get this ASAP in Pretoria. :022:

Thanks:bouncy-blue:

Remove all the ceramic noodles, bio balls, the carbon they give (use a better brand) and some of the sponges. Speak to Lanzo (Dorry Pets - A sponsor) or Pet Stop about the carib sea although he's closed for the long weekend. Any sugarfine aragonite can be used in place of the carib sea if you can't get it

On that: What proper skimmers fit into the in standard 550 compartment? Or is hang on back the way to go?

Hang on would be the only way to go unless an overflw to a sump is used in a modified cabinet seeing that those cabinets dont have much space for a sump. Reef Octopus have a nice one or the Red Sea Prizm.

I also figured that no decent skimmer can fit into those small holes. A sump might even work better than a hang on!

Hi I got my tank !!!! And caribsea.... I also upgraded the pump, I want to move the original pump to the compartment where I put live rock
speaking of live rock I bought 15 kg cured Kenya live rock. I also added caribsea live sand aragonite.

So far it's a great tank

Also removed all filter media I got with, bought phophate remover and filter mat

the skimmer I'm still deciding bout

the lighting I wanna upgrade but can't cuz cash flow is a bit low
I wanna keep sps and anemones so need to upgrade, and the light is also bit too blue to my liking since it's 50/50.

For flow don't think i'll be able to keep powerheads I'm the tank since I wanna keep nems. Thinking of a flow regulator... Could someone plz advise me on what to do to increase the flow enough to keep sps and bta.

here is a pic, couldnt see much cuz the sand made the water cloudy so I just packed the rock so it doesnt fall, it has cleared up a bit now so I can see the rocks, gonna do some aquascaping 2mrw.

P.S. the bottle is there cuz I need still need bit of water will go down to the LFS to get more 2mrrw.

I also added prodibio Start up.

Hi Kukkieb Welkom to MASA. First let me apologise on behalf of the rest of us for overlooking the help you seek. Please forgive.
It suggest you go to the new member section of the forum and introduce your self there.

welcometomasa kukkieb Sorry weekends are slow on MASA as guys are off doing what we do.

For a nem you might be pushing your luck in a small tank. They require very good water quality and parameters are hard to keep constant in a small water volume. But, if you can, after about a year, once your tank is fully mature and been problem free for a while, you could attempt it. But since you are going to try SPS, one indicator of a good system is when you can keep SPS happy for a few months.

But in terms of your flow. Try a Closed Loop System (CLS). this sytem makes use of a pump that takes water from your DT(display tank) and pushes it straight back into the DT via the outlets you make up. This way no nennies can get into pumps. But as far as the mods you need to do to your tank to get this done i cant really say as i've never kept a boyu, any tank that isnt glass for that matter. But maybe it can be done, or possibly have been done already. So just check all the other Boyu threads to see what can be done to help you out

Welcome, kukkieb. As scuba said on weekend the forum might be a bit "slow" we also have to mow the lawn etc in between (also cheaper to use the boss's internet :p)

Please dont start tghinking of keeping nemmies at this stage (although it is a good thing that you plan ahead). If finances are a problem / tight look at regiies playsand for a substrate...works very well.

See you are from PTA why not join the club, easiest way to get direct answers and LOTS of info from other guys !

Hi here is an update :)

this is what the tank looks like now, but i still want to add 2 more pieces of LR

This is what the parameters are like...

Ph 8.2
Kh Alkanity 8 dkh
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
Ammonia 0.05

I also found this little guy in the tank, I am certain he wasnt there when I bought the piece of rock...

I saw it on Friday night and since then it has triple in size he is about 2 cm now.

Can someone plz identify it... :wave2:

Dunno, looks like a piece of Gorgonian left over on the rock, but not sure. Will find a pic of one I had with the same colour:

Could be a piece of this:

Or a piece of this:

Is it possible that I have skipped the cycle since I added prodibio startup and my ammonia is not rising higher than 0.05 I also added 15 kg of LR.

The startup consisted of bacteria and ammonia to feed it should I add something to keep the bacteria going since there is almost no ammonia left???

I'm really confused cuz From what I understand the bacteria will die without ammonia to break down.

Plz help

Thanks
