Hello!

Looking to set up my own RO/DI system. What brands do people usually go with?

And how does one go about setting one up

Im based in Cape Town.

I guess something like a 5 stage with Di Resin chamber - And main membrane being Dow which is good quality. Carbon will be one chamber - Coconut carbon is food grade and good absorption

It largely depends on your needs and budget. You can go whole hog and get a 7 stage with a pump and have the H2O store plumb it in for you, just get a pipe before remineralisation.

On the other side of the spectrum you can just use tap water with a dechlorinator, the Cape Town water isn't terrible based on my experience and the annual tests they do, but there remains a risk of TDS, metals, etc.

I went the budget route and got a cheap 3 stage from Takealot and added a DI from McMerwe. They also sell the tubes and connectors.

In terms of plumbing, the one above has a splitter that connects to the braided connector under your sink, the plumbing is surprisingly easy. There's a waste water line from the RO filter, it outputs about 4x what the RO does. I add dechlorinator and use it for my freshwater fish. Otherwise you can just plumb it into the waste water of the sink, but that feels wasteful.
