Hi guys

Is anyone using the seachem matrix stobes as filtration, I have added 1& a half liters in my 4ft reef tank, but my nitrates are still rather high. What would be the best way to use it.

The bomb method. Put them in a filter sock, put in an airstone with a small pump, leave it in a high flow area in your sump.

Matrix takes a bit of time to get going. Bacteria first need to colonize before they kick into action.

My sons tank main filtration is Matrix stones. Works well. But just as the same with any other biological filter, it takes time to mature. Although is quicker than a DSB, it still takes more than a month.

depending on usage, high floe area and it would be more aerobic. Low flow and it will be more anaerobic.

I had it in a bubble magus reactor, removed it last weekend and put them in a peg busket, and using the reactor for GFO and Carbon.

Thanks Riaan.

How is your son running it in his tank.

First lot is in a flow though area, a basket with netting on the bottom, with water entering at the top, flowing out the bottom. Then another pool filter leave catcher next to the return pump with more stones in it, nothing forcing water to run through that basket.

I got matrix stones in another tank in a reactor. That looks like the bottom parts of a RO unit. But with bigger connection points, 19mm instead of tiny connectors as normally used on a RO unit.
Very slow flow going through it. Seems to be working, but then again, that same system got a DSB and have cheato.

On my main system, I got 5kg Matrix in an upflow chamber. A 10cm wide chamber between skimmer and first DSB. It also got a piece of eggcrate at the bottom, with netting over that to prevent the stones from falling through. The eggcrate is about 20mm from the bottom, about the same as the gap under that first divider.
