Biological filtering with carbon?

Hi everyone.

So I have added an LED light and Ive been running it for 8 hours a day, when the display tank is off I turn it on and vica verca.

There has been some brown algae growth but only in the sump where the live rock is.

I dont overfeed and I do a 15% water chance weekly. I dont have any other algae growth in the display tank. I also swop the filter sock every 5 days.
I can't do a water test (don't have the kit) and will only be going to a lfs this weekend.

My question is, is this growth good or bad?

Why run a light in the sump if there are no macro algae?

This brown algae is just using up some excess nutrients you think you do not have.

Adding the macro algae soon:m06:
And could not keep myself from switching on the light after I installed it.

Is it a good thing that the algae is growing since it is using up those nutrients?

And Im worried that if I switch of the light the algae would die releasing more nutrients?

Just tun the light on a timer set to a reversed schedule than your display.

Thank you, did it an it is set to a reversed cycle hopefully the cheato will grow
