SPS Advise Please - RTN?

Hi all please have a look at this piece of SPS I only noticed it yesterday does not seem any bigger today - the SPS piece is going white at the bottom.

Here are some pics what do I do? all other SPS do not have this

I can't get a better pic they have to be zoomed in & are at the base - the only way would be to remove the piece which I will only do if I need to frag it

have a look where it's white not sure if I should leave it or frag it? it's a small amount but still rather catching things early
 
Well I can tell you it isn't RTN otherwise the coral would already be completely white. It is STN, I had it on all my sps a while ago. This was due to low nutrients and my alkalinity dropping below 7. What I did to stop the STN is raise my alk, feed more and dose brightwells restor. The problem with STN is that once it starts it usually doesn't stop, no matter what you do (Short of fragging the tips of the coral off).
 
Hmmm - thats not good my alk is 9 & has been all the time - maybe it's low nutrients been using brightwell coralamino.

how did your stop? & it does not seem to be getting worse? will keep watching it & it's only on that piece of SPS in the tank
 
The coral amino is a good thing, try double the dose or switch to seachem reef plus, it has amino acids as well as vitamins for the corals, this seemed to stop mine. Another cause of STN on the base is a lack of flow.

I got really good flow - it seems like it just started or it has been there some time - only noticed it now will keep watching it seems to only be in 2 places.

Also use Lugol's

Will watch it & if it get's any worse will have to frag it which I so do not want to do :(
 
Manic can I frag around the base? with a stanley knife? it's only just started at the base?
 
Looks like base bleaching Mark. Keep an eye on it and monitor if it gets worse by the weekend. Mines stopped when I went off the microbacter stuff...

I would only frag should it look like its going to the stem....from what I can see its more on the edges of the encrusted base.

Yes i dont think that is RTN either by the sounds of the description. It could be a flow thing as already said. Or a nutrient thing. Check your flow around the base and if it advances to the stem as said you cut off the part that is going white by cutting off a bit of the good parts too, to ensure that it all comes off. Check your Ca. Sometimes you get white patches on SPS where your Ca is too low. Could be that too
 
Mark do you use lugos on a regular bases. To much iodide could also be the cause. Check your iodine levels and iodide if you can.

From what I can see. The recession is at the base of the coral. Two things could be the problem here, the corl is shading the base and therefore not enough light is reaching it, or there is a lack of flow at the base.
 
there is no direct light on both parts that have turned white - what to do? is it just part of reef keeping?
