Hi all, i have about 20kg of LR in my sump and discovered some fireworms or actually a lot of them in the LR and sump...Are they dangerous, beneficial to the tank or do i need to get rid of them? If so how do I go about it?

Thx

Hi Dikdaan if i am you flush them, but pls do not use your hands to remove as if they sting you will not like it at all, and fire worms can strangle fish while sleeping and kill them

Are you sure they are fireworms and not bristleworms? Bristleworms are good to have, although, you still don't want to touch them.

take a picture i have lots of bristle worms never hade a problem they mostly come out at dark

Will take a pic later, im rather sure that they are fireworms as they are redish on the sides!

I will buy them off you... Seriously, fire worms are GOOD for your tank - they are only bad for you if you accidentally brush the back of your hand (or arm...) against one whilst "fiddling" in the tank. Just let them be - after all, you paid good money for them when you bought your live rock.

the ony time they will attack something in your tank if it is dying or dead otherwise all good

Where did you hear this. It is absolutely bollocks. It is very good to have them in your system. I had lots of them and never had problems

Best scavengers you can have.
Just do not touch them. Normally happens when you rearrange rocks, and one is hiding under the rock you are grabbing. Not nice, burns like hell, been there, done that.

Only a problem if they really gets BIG, like in 25cm or more. But the smaller ones out compete the big one for food and the big ones eventually die out. Well that is what I found in my tank. Got loads of them in my cheato ball.

Very nice article. Thanx.

I leave my bristleworms to move all over as they clean in holes where other cant get to. some of Mine come out when I feed and the lights is on.

I have one question. If the bristleworms crawl thrue the zoas branches - is that oky ?(zoas looks still good)

Thanks for all the info!!!They will live in the sump with the LR...Thx again for helping me out with all the info!!They are about 5cm each

Lastnite while checkin my tank out after lights out i saw about 2 reddish worms, seems to me like fireworms just laying ther on the substrate,about10cm long.
should i remove them with a trap,or are they ok to leave in the tank.
Many articles say its ok,then other ppl say they eat/destroy corals.

Do they only eat dead matter,or will they destroy my corals

99% the time you don't have anything to worry about. There is a lot of myth and misconception about bristleworms... even the big ones! Maj I have pulled a 10cm one from my tank too! I froze it, but after reading a lot of articles thereafter I regret it! They are by and large very good for your tank.

ok thats good to hear,il let them just be in the tank then

thnks Dane
