how long can fish stay in the bag you buy them in

there is NO short answer to this, the best answer, is as short a time as is possible.
some of the better shops will put pure oxygen into the bag, this gives you much longer time, most however put in compressed air.....
the longer the fish is in the bag (and the bigger the fish) the quicker the O2 is used up nd the faster it dies ...
perhaps ask the question in a different way.... what fish are you wanting to transport and how far?

would advise against it unless they pack in oxygen .... HOWEVER a POSSIBLE option is to buy them, wrap them in a jacket to preserve the heat as much as possible, then open the bag ..... this will allow new air in and promote O2 exchange.... however without an airstone i dont know how effictive this will be..... why not get them sometime when you can take them directly home??

Not forgetting : How quickly its gonna get home? Doesnt help you live 5 km's from pet shop but still gonna do grocery buying after the pet shop:nono: - Also better to carry a little cooler box with you so to try and keep the temp of the water in the bag constant! Then keep the whole bag in the coolerbox to be safe! (Throw the 6 pack on the back seat and make place for the plastic bag!)
Could you rather if i do have a cooler box take them out of the bag and put them in there....
I've travelled with fish all the way from Durbs (400km's) like this - just in the cooler box but I had a battery operated air pump running just to compensate for the long trip - but yes the temp will be more stable in the box alone and there will be more oxygen - remember another golden rule - when transporting fish they not gonna use up the water they in - they gonna use up the air so try and give them more air than water - also if you can try to get them not just after they have eaten because if they stress and poo in the water that also is detrimental to their health - so if possible maybe get them before their normal feeding time or well after the've been fed so they leave their waste in the tnk they coming from! The water is only considered as used up because the fish have used the air in the water up - thats why more important to have more air than water in the travelling vessel - whether it be plastic bag or cooler box - if you wanna go the extra mile get yourself a battery operated air pump (not more than R100 in most pet shops) and use that but temperature stability is the key factor to remember so that the fish dont stress with the trip - also dont forget to acclimatise them when putting them in your tank and NEVER NEVER put the water you travelled with in your tank!

I know its too late, but another simple solution, just put them in an big size plastic bag, with a lot of water and air to normal relation. A lot more water, a lot more oxygen in the water. A lot more time.
But what I found works better for longer periods, like moving a tank, put the fish in a cooler box, with some live rock that will not tumble, and small powerhead or battery airpump and close the lid. Fish can hide against something known, and its dark - they stress less.
