OK, this may not be the greatest reef on the planet, but it's proof that it is possible to run a reef without a skimmer. I have a DSB, an algal filter and liverock as filtration. the pictures that follow were taken in December 2008. The first algal filter was introduced in about August 2008. I removed the skimmer totally on the 10th of Jan 2009 when the algal filter was running well.

Still with a skimmer:

I'll take some photos soon so that you can see the difference in SPS colours. I'll also take photos of the algal filter.

awesome tank

Thanks Mudshark - for sharing this with us. I would like to see that you update this thread during the rest of this year as well - I would LOVE to see progress pictures on an ongoing basis - if that is ok with you?

Sweet buddy, you finally got your pics loaded, now what about the tank in the kitchen, or you gonna be holding out on us.

wont say anything about the tank because i know how much better it looks now.
But well done my friend, you have come a long way.

very nice tank!!! how many fish do you have in total? i wonder how your current size of ATS would cope with an increase in bio load, very interesting stuff, did you make it with santa's size to tank ratio etc? would love to know if it could keep up with an increase in bio load. like when is too much fish for it too handle and needs to be made bigger etc..
