Rebreather divers in SA?

Hi All

I just wanted to find out how many rebreather divers we have in SA? Is anyone certified in rebreathing on the forum? Currently I am a open water advanced diver who can dive up to a maximum of 30m deep.

I have a large amount of dives under my belt and I am looking to start my rebreather diving course now. I have been doing some research on what rebreather unit I should purchase but I have noticed that the recreational rebreather units are have a deco upgrade but only gives me another 10-18m.

So what I wanted to know as well is what equipment you are using if you are a certified rebreather and how deep you are able to go?
 
I tried a dolphin rebreather a few years back but never did the padi course
Once I finish my master scuba course I might try again
 
I must have a look at that. How deep are you certified to dive? There are so many options. 100ft is pretty deep but I wanna go further.​
 
40m I think, lost count of my dives
I have been to 54m :eek: but that's a long story
 
54m! :yeahdude: I know what you mean, Ive got a few dive log books. Every chance I get im in the water. My instructor says I am long off from 100m. He said that I need to log over 100 - 150 rebreather dives to be ready to dive deep.

I have been learning more and more about the safer options. I am still trying to understand the different between trimix and heliox. I want as much time as possible down there but I want to make sure that I don't suffer from the bendz on the way back up.
 
My plan is to get to 80m by the end of the year. I wanna go over to Hawaii or Tahiti sometime within next year, I have been talking to Rufus Kimura and depending on how quick I can dive down to 100-120m I might be able to join them on one of there expeditions.
 
I've done some VERY deep dives when I used to work as a Com. diver. Re-breathers are nice, but useless if you're doing anything physical. IMO and IME, the deeper you go - the more boring it gets...

i agree, but they were lekker to just chill and drift
 
I am a qualified Re-breather diver.
What's the fascination with going deep? the best things to see are all shallower than 20m anyway.

I see to many people fascinated with going deep only to be bitterly disappointed @NitroNarcer I would also look at doing a specialised deep divers course if you are so keen on diving deep, I would also do the rescue diver and dive master course before diving very deep, reason being is that these course make you a more complete diver in theory anyway and teach how to be prepared for most things that could happen.
Having said that though some of the best divers I know only have open water 1 but that would be my suggestion anyway

Agree with @Xenobalistes.
Unless you are going looking for something specific at that depth like a coelacanth or some sort of rare fish or treasure... To me its very boring.
I have done a couple of deep trimix dives with a good friend of mine close to diepgat off the coast at sodwana bay in the hope that we might find a coelacanth, but that ended up to be the most boring dives ive ever done & i completely wasted 2 days to do 1 dive (& a lot of money...)

I have done only one dive with a rebreather before, but for the amount of dives i do... It just wasn't worth buying one for myself.

Another thing that I would recommend when doing a dive deeper than 60m, is that you should only dive with a buddy that you know VERY well, & knows your abilities & history! I would never do my first real deep dive in a foreign country with someone I don't know! Deep down... You need a buddy that cares & has the ability to get you safely to the surface if something does go wrong...
A guy I once knew died on his very first deep dive while looking for coelacanth's at sodwana about 10 years ago.

yes i did rescue and opted for master scuba diver rather than dive master..

but as said above unless you chasing mermaid and triton himself, more fun is had at 12-25m

did a dive at 5m and saw the most amazing stuff
 
I am qualified on the Poseidon MKVI rebreather up to 48 metres with Trimix and deco. Waiting to do the 60m course and just have to get my number of dives in to be able to teach it.
The reason for the 60m course going to Truk Lagoon in September and lots of the wreck are technical dives

Think you need to look at something like the Hollis prism 2 which is a technical rebreather as the Poseidon is semi tech at this time. You would have to do a lot of diving to be able to get to the 80m level and will take a lot longer to get to the 100-120m level.
On another note, I hope you have some moola as the courses and equipment you are going to need aren't cheap:blush:

Poseidon Technical Rebreather
 
I saw that Poseidon is releasing the tech rebreather but haven't seen when. The problem is currently with the line of Poseidon rebreathers is that the 2 battery packs that allow you to go to 40m and 48m which is still very shallow. I would like to get the experience here in SA before going abroad and doing some deep sea diving. I am extremely aware and cautious of the risk involved in going those depths so its me and 4 life long friends who are going to be doing the course together. Nothing worse than being down 100m and not knowing if anyone has your back.

The reason I wanna go down that deep is discover new species of fish, I don't know what SA waters can have down deep but in the Pacific they have found the following fish recently.

That's what my main interest is, finding new fish and great depths. I know its going to take years and years of experience and plenty of dives to get there but I am patient.
