Hi Guys

I am hoping to get some expert advice on doing the lighting for my new up and coming tank. Below are 2 pictures indicating the size of the tank and proposed layout of the radions. The red box indicates the footprint of where I want to put my rock, the tank will be 240cm x 120cm x 70cm, with both long sides and 1 short side viewable. It will be a SPS dominated tank.

What do you guys think, please vote and leave some constructive info.

I have never owned leds or a tank this large so not sure which will be the best.

I would rather go for too much than not have enough. You can always run them at reduced power if 8 are too much, but if you dont have enough light with 6...

Also vote for 8.
Simple calculation to support my choice...
One radion's optimum coverage is 600x600mm (0.36 sqm).
Tank area: 2400x1200mm (2.88 sqm)
2.88 / 3.6= 8 units.

I would however start by making the spacing between the 2 rows wider to get a better light spread...

i think 6 will be ok if you angle it and space it lekker. the other 2 can be sent to me :)

With the dimensions of the tank i would suggest minimum of 8 units each covering a surface area of 600x600

Which units are you looking at the XR30 w or XR30 w Pro
Here are some stats
8 x XR30w = 1120w
8 x XR30w pro = 1360w

Other options
24x 54w T5's = 1296w
8 x AI sol Led = 600w
8 x AI vega = 760w

IMO LED's are about saving energy and reducing replacement costs
24 T5's replacement cost +- 8k yeah maybe.
If you add the energy saving in there you have saved 200w on the older radion and no energy saving on the new unit which in a year with a 12 hour day that totals 854kw hours saving on the old radion and an additonal cost of 280kw hours on the new radion

But now with the AI sol you save 3048kw hours or 2348kw hous on the AI vega.

Which is best for you and your pocket thats for you to decide.

Sorry for the huge edit guys this should make more sense.

I have a 3.2m x 1m x .77m(WD) and only run 4 radions. I have 3 portholes of 600mm square on the back side which gets natural light. with this set up I have had no problems with any of my corals all growing well and colours are good.

@Visser & @ADVdiver, I understand where you are coming from, but I will not be putting coral on the sand at all unless they are in the red area(it wont be a solid wall of rock). I like the look of a tank with lots of negative space, so only the red portion plus a bit extra will have to be lit with enough light to grow coral.

@jacqolive, have you purchased the lights already or made a part purchase? Someone here also asked which model you were looking to use, Gen1(with or without lenses?) or Pro?

Nice researched post by @ADVdiver.

I didnt want to throw other brands at you but....... Have you looked at the Pacific Sun Triton?
Link Pacific Sun Triton R2 uses 10 different LEDs in this modular LED fixture

@Nemeziz_za, I have not purchased anything yet, I am currently only looking at the radions and the vertex illumina 360 1.8m. If I go radion it will be the PRO.

The other thing I have to consider is that it will be a rimless tank so I am trying to get that balance between whats is enough to successfully grow corals and esthetics.

why not look at Orphek units?
i get effective area of 900 x 900 and other unit 900 x 800 at a depth of 700
on your tank could use 4 x atlantiks or 3 dif 100 XP
