Just went through the same thing. Was on holiday and the person looking after my house was not at home. Power went out at 22h00 and came back on at about 06h00 the next morning. Checked this on my reef controller. Got back to a sad looking tank 3 days later. Then the night I got back the power went out again at 22h00 (I was already sleeping, so didn't even know) and only came back on at 07h00 the next morning. Needles to say my tank is not doing well at all.

Hope you okes are well prepared. Glad its not happening in my area, Good luck guys

Now see this is scary. Even though I have a backup system, not a day or night goes by that I dont pray for the power to please not go out!

The problem is that I also wont know if the power goes off during the night. Sometimes wake up to check my electrical alarm clock!!!!! Still want to have an alarm of some sort installed in my bedroom to trigger when the power goes off....

Got a generator so will just have it on standby - fill it up and start it will run all night

I wake up as soon as I don't hear my water running out of my reactor. Also have a backup, but have a tiny genie that keeps my heaters running @vatso.

Prepared, but hate the fact that there will be no power.

We had a power cut in Pretoria about two weeks ago. All i could do was put in some seroius air pumps with air stones on and wacked it up to max otput. This caused alot of air and current, tank seems to be ok, power was off for about 8 hrs. Question is, will this be enough if the power goes off for 12-20 hrs for eg?

I had no power for 26 hours about two months back, temp was my only issue (dropped to 18 '), only ran my main pump through the sump and I have a very high stock level, lost nothing! Touch wood!

So the gennie should be the answer for running a heater.

Most definitely, a UPS would drain of power very quickly if a heater is plugged into it. You don't need a very expensive genie, I have a tiny one, cost me about R600 a few years back.

I have a 7.5 kva gennie that i got from a friend but it is in need of some minor repairs and a good service. Then i can run a bit more that just my heater.

You can sleep with peace of mind if you have a pump, safety connector and small gate battery, you will not even notice that the power has gone off..........

Just a reminder to those that live in the affected areas, it will e happening tonight. I tried to phone electricity dept, but they cannot confirm or deny it, will only know when it happens.
