Cheapest place in DBN to buy glass?

Hi all, as the title says - where in DBN is the cheapest place to buy glass? I'm going to be building my sump as soon as I've got it.

Went to maizeys to find out how much acrylic would cost and i almost fell over! :eek:

Oh, and on a side note - what glass thickness should I be looking at wrt building a sump?

I stand totally corrected but I think I saw on a Thread that the best place was Builders Express or Warehouse...something like that...if I recall correctly, he said it was half the price than what PG Glass quoted him...sorry I can't remember which Thread...
 
I went to the Builders off Queen Nandi drive close to the Heart Hospital yesterday looking for glass but they only stock 3mm & 4mm.

1830x1220 at 3mm costs R209.78 and the same size in 4mm costs 312.45. Big sheets but ye, not 6mm :(

Unless they stock different sizes at different their different branches?

For a sump why not go for second hand glass - give PG a shout, they often get cracked shopfront glass that can be used quite happily, all luck of the draw, maybe you will get lucky. It's all laminated stuff, but bigger sheets are quite thick and dirt cheap.
 
Won't they order for you? Price sounds good. I had the number of some very cheap guys but I'm sorry I lost it.
 
Hi im currently also in the process, called 2 places, costa glass and Glass South Africa, Price diff was negligable at about R50.00 per square, GSA was cheaper @ R200 excl /per square of 6mm and R700 excl for 10mm, im going with GSA as there workmanship WRT to polishing is good, they have the equipment (neater finish on edge as apposed to the belt sander most guys use to take of the sharp edge, with GSA u wont see the small chips, only prob they dont know what is starfire, im a bit lost as well, is starfire toughened glass?

They also drill holes as well not sure of cost though?

Keep us posted if u getting it cheaper.

GSA are a little cleless as to the clearer glass types but ask them about low iron, that may ring a bell.. but GSA are very expensive on these unusual types of glass.. to give you an indication on a 15mm comparision

Africa glass (now liquidated) were R550pm2 on 15mm
GSA were R2400pm2 on 15mm

im not sure why there was a difference but i do know that both parties buy the glass from another local manufacturer....

as for "polishing" any of the glass companys can do it for you upon request, the norm is to "arris" which is merley smoothing the sharp edge...

Nice one, thanks gents. I was going to start shopping around tomorrow but this has made it easier.
 
A simple yellow pages search has landed me 38 possibilites...

Well, my sump is going to be a 850mm (l) x 380mm (w) x 500mm (h) with 3 partitions with 2 sets of baffles so it's not huge but not that small either... after about 1/2 an hour with one of the ladies there working out what the best way would be to cut up one of their HUGE sheets I eventually got a quote for around R 3400 excl. the glue for R 130 for 6mm.

What you think? :lol: Maybe it was just because I had no clue on pricing but I had to try hard to keep my face neutral when she gave it to me :p

R3 400 exc...:eek: Is that what Acrylic cost's..? WOW..even being that expensive, I have to ask..isn't it in the long run, a better option..? Maybe just for the DT...? Almost like switching to LED's..big 1st time outlay, but then save in the long run.... I'm reading so much odd and ends about the "advantages" of Acrylic..will admitt, I would consider it at MAYBE twise the price, but THAT sounds a bit sleep...:p

The rep at Maizeys was telling me that acrylic is 10 times stronger than glass and if you do manage to break it it's shatterproof. But personally, as you said, huge initial cost but I can't justify even saying that it it would be beneficial in the long run when glass offers you exactly what you need at not even close to the price of acrylic.

I think it's just another one of those things... if you have the extra cash to do it then go for it but like me.. if you're just starting out then I'd rather be spending the extra money elsewhere, like getting a bigger skimmer or fancier LEDs.

True , Acrilic is about 15 times tougher than glass , also lighter etc. Also should you scratch an acrilic tank , fixing it is much easier
 
So.... of those 38 places that weren't doubles, closed and only selling glass for cars I eventually got pricing from 7 places.

Pricing on a 1m² sheet of 6mm glass (from lowest to highest) :

City Glass & Aluminium R 215.75

Art-Tech Manufacturers R 250.80

Phoenix Glass Works R 315.20

Gillitts Glass & General Maintenance R 450.00

Argyle Glazing R 467.40

I know Costa and GSA were mentioned but they were closed. I'm pretty happy with R 215.75 @ City Glass & Aluminium. These guys are in Springfield Park so I've got a good idea as to where to find them too. Glass hub are in Sea View down the South Coast - I'll probably spend the difference in petrol going there anyway.

What I find amazing is the difference in pricing with these places ranging from around R 200 up to around R500 for the same thing.... jeez :eek:

..:thumbup:..this is great Info..thanks for doing all the homework..:blush: I have to ask..is this just normal glass or is this quote for the Starfire or low iron glass I remembered reading about yesterday...:)
