South African Butterfly fish

They're fine in a FOWLR, problem is that they are classed as cold-water butterflies, so if your tank temp is constantly above 20, death is imminent.

I agree. It is the same if you were to be on a treadmile at full pace 24/7.
How long do you think you can survive?

And the fact that they are picky eaters.Mine never took to pellets and or flakes.

And almost no soft corals is safe with them in your tank!!

On the bright side....i never had aptasia when i had my two local butterflys.

I've kept them for max 3 years. They are very common down here so I haven't bothered for a good 10 years or so...

Thy are on the red list ...

Barely, they're only there because their range is so limited.

Chaetodon marleyi (Doublesash Butterflyfish)
Status: Least Concern ver 3.1
Pop. trend: stable

Basically the order of "endangered" looks like this:

as you can see, as a "Least Concern", they are a long way from being extinct - same as your ex apolemichthys kingi.

Damn, you like your "red list" fish Yuri.

There are 2 red list fish I will like
Chaetodon litus and Centropyge resplendens

Strange choice of fish, Centropyge resplendens looks like the deformed, in-bred cousin of our jumping-bean (Centropyge acenthops) and any butterfly looks like Chaetodon litus at 2 in the morning.....

pics for the non-latin speakers...

lol if the overseas guys see a doubleslash butterfly in your tanks they would go insane!

I guess we are more lucky in SA than we think. Sure we may pay an extra nut for a good skimmer over the USA guys but we can just go down to the coast and catch gem tangs, double slash buttferflies etc :) ... Obviously its best if you live in Indonesia lol

No, they are endemic to SA, occasionally straying into Moz. The furthest west they have ever been recorded (not smuggled) is Lambert's Bay. Cold and currents mean that they could NEVER get all the way up to Ghana without human intervention.

Indeed, that's why its called the soouth african butterfly :whistling:

I had a chat with a good friend of the owner of crown fish he informed me the fish was collected in Ghana (most likely a stray fish)
