hi everybody

can you please help me in my idea for constructing a small shrimp tank .

what is the reasonable tank size ? what equipment should i use ?

what is the tank mates of shrimps (inverts ofcourse) ?

Just what I need - but I have to breed my shrimps to feed my eels and lions - tagging along







 
what shrimp/s are you planning to keep ?
 
i am thinking for the small shrimps

cleaner shrimps , dancer shrimps , fire shrimps , camel shrimps

i want to put a quantity not a one or two each

Food shrimps;) Not for long!

You can´t keep quantity of different species in a small tank. Even quantities of the same species, requires different sized tanks.

Example: You keep 20 cleaners in 100 l tank, you cant keep 20 fires in 100 l tank.
The 100 litre is just an example.
 
Maybe this last post was for me? If so what would be the best shrimps for me to keep in a standard 3 foot tank and have them breed succesfully in order for my predators to have delecacies? Or start a new thread - dont want to hijack aminyassien thread

What do you mean with breed succesfully? Do you want shrimp larvae or do you want to grow them out?

For breeding purposes you can keep a pair of peppermints or cleaners in a tank of 20 x 15cm. If you do that with boxing or fire shrimps, the male gets killed by the female during his molt. These species require 30 x 20 cm space.
 
for the moment

what i need is a tank and a hanging filter + carbon

is that all for shrimps ?

no issue for lightinig or skimming ?

please advice

Hey there amin - would the hang on be enough filteration.... Why not put a skimmer on - even if its hang on - I would think these buggers waste needs to be taken out as much as possible if you want them to be happy - and why not just plain T5 lighting .... I'm sure they would be nice to watch

Due to the feeding nature of the lionfish I would have liked to have plenty of shrimp to feed the lionfish and eels maybe like twice a week with live shrimp ... so shrimp lavae wont fill them up ... that would be like hatching brine shrimp - BTW - what would happen if if I took a tablespoon of brine shrimp eggs and emptied it into a standard 3 foot tank and just let them grow - not net them after 24 hours? would I not get lots and lots of shrimp growing in there - obviously I wouldnt have any fish in there to eat the newly hatched shrimp but maybe some sand and liverock and maybe a few zoa's but no fish at all - Anyone tried this or am I going down a dead end road?
 
It is much easier to grow out clowns, than shrimps.
Even growing out brines is not an easy task. I did and I tried it many times until I succeed. Clowns I raised in quantity with my first attempt.
Why not using brackish water fish like mollies?
 
Read on international forums and confirmed by some of the members here on MASA - fresh water fish not enough nutritional value in fresh water fish - also hear there is too much fats and aminoe acids and to put it lightly as asked by Frans;) "How many guppy's/swordfish or mollies did I see while snorkling:lol:"

it depends where you are snorkeling

Thats also true, there is an article about breeding banggais with the use if guppies. They seemed to be succesful, but I also don't want to that route, because of their different HUFA profile.

If you want to provide the perfect nutrtion for them, forget about live food.
The only way to go is to make your own foid in the blender. Thats why every professional breeder is doing it.

if you keep your water just cooler that the development of the clowns are faster
is this true
(the theory behind it is that thy get more time to digest the the important nutrients)
have you had a go at this

Usually warmer temperatures are better for development. I must have a look.
Thanks for the tip.
Another theory is, to run the grow out with hyposalinity.
Almost no energy gets wasted for osmo regulation.
