Bio balls bio have a lot of surface area which enables a lot of bacteria to grow and this causes amonia and nitrite to be turned into nitrate quickly. however. Some say they are bad.Food, waste and all other sort of detritus gets caught in them which in terms creates more nitrate. Typically this in undesirable. Some other factors come into play but I think for most ppl, it's too easy for the bio balls to accumulate crud. I personally think that adding a dsb and refigium is a better way to go. Mother nature gave us those things and she knows best.lol. Bio balls only do nitrification where live rock and a dsb will do nitrification, denitrification etc. by bringing live into the aquarium. so go with the dsb and refugium. please correct me if I am wrong guys

Bio Balls Have been used in the Marine Industry for Years and Years.
There is nothing wrong with them. They only Cause problems when not cleaned.

I think its personal choice really. All the Options Work.

    Welcome

I am currently running a a dsb and a bio ball chamber, personally I would never again be without the DSB. If you decide on going for the dsb you are welcome to get a cup of sand from my tank to inoculate if you so desire. I belief good biodiversity and maintenance is the key to a healthy tank.

Yes, been used for years. The thing is bio balls are very good at converting ammonia to nitrites and then to nitrates, but this is where it stops and your nitrates keeps on climbing. If you have a fish only setup, no problem - that is why most petshops still use them in the holding tanks. Now it will be a problem if you have a coral tank as they don't like high nitrates.
A DSB removes nitrates and convert it into nitrogen. Bio balls doesn't.
