    Hi @Phillip.Cloete,

You dont have to buy them as a pair. I bougt my first "pair" seperate and they paired within the first 10min of being together in the tank. After about 15months I lost my Yellow Watchman Goby. The little pistol was alone for about 1 month. I finally got another Yellow Watchman. Within 5 min he joined the Pistol in his cave. They have been together eversince. I must add. I dont have experience with other Pistol shrimps or Gobies. Mine is the little Tiger Pistol Shrimp and the Yellow Watchman Goby.

This picture of the 2 was taken a year ago

Why do you have to have them paired by a petshop?

Don't have to be paired just never seen one of them in a petshop before seems like the pistol shrimp is not a favourite to keep or maybe I just have bad luck and visit the shops at the wrong time

Helga is correct about buying separate, I've got a pink spotted and a pistol paired and bought both seperate. I'm sure your LFS could put a order in for a pistol shrimp after you have added a goby

I am not 100% sure, but what I can find on the internet and in my books, its the NON-sandsifting Gobies that pair with shrimp. Watchman Gobies (Cryptocentrus species), Shrimp Gobies (Amblyeleotris) and the Yasha (Stonogobiops).

If you look at their Simbiotic relationship it makes sense as the above mentioned Gobies are not burrowers and need the shrimp to do that for them.

    Philip,
What you can do to make sure they pair up, is to put them in a small tank for a few days just to bond and then add them together to your DT.

Phillip, you can try Petstop in Pretoria. They had yellow wachmen gobies last week. I am sure Moolis will be able to locate a Pistol srimp for you.
