Hi, my xenia is dieing! Its becoming less and the piece that dies is purple and hard. What does xenia need to survive and grow quick! I've got good lighting and water flow. I've got a brilliant skimmer. What chemicals are important?

Hi Shane - Hhmmm - there must be SOMETHING that is "poisoning" your xenia. Xenia is FAIRLY hardy and strong, and do not "just die".

I have some xenia in my fish only system, that have been holding on for the past year.
Not doing GREAT, but not dying either. And my fish only tank's water parameters is REALLY a mess.... Because I have +-20 KZN rock-pool fish in this 300 litre tank of mine...
And I feed quite a bit....

My nephew stayed here while we were on away - for a week, and he overfed... the xenia STILL survived.....
I have cyano ALL over the fish only tank, because of the overfeeding - but my xenia still did not die.

Could you perhaps post a picture of the "live" and "dying" xenia?

What are your water parameters like?

What are your nitrate and phosphate readings? are you using R/O salt mix or natural sea water? tap water?

    Have you changed anything recently?

Shane, some tanks just never get Xenia right, no matter what you do.

Xenia grows like weeds on what i call dirty water (high nutrient) good moderate to high (not direct) flow you can add Iodine and Stontium they love that.

If you skimm the all the nutrient out of your tank they will tend to melt and die

They can and do survive in low nutrient tank. I have no nitrates and harvest like crazy. The only thing I have found is that the growth slows down a bit in low nutrients

Check the salinity with an accurate glass float hydrometer or calibrated refractometer - I have a suspicion that your salinity might not be optimum (35ppt, 1.024-1.025 @ 26-27°C).
