Hi guys, I need to build a wooden stand for my 4ft tank. Need some advice on what is the best wood to use etc.

I assume marine ply and polystyrene will be the best for the base of the tank?

What should I use for the legs and supports?

Should I use just normal wood glue and screws for the joins?

    Thanks.

Viper. Why not build a metal frame for the tank with a cabinet wrap that can pull away. The wood will eventually swell and rot. Most south african woods are too soft and porous because the hot climate makes the trees grow fast which makes the wood softer

Viper if you send me the dims of the tank and the viewing height i can send you a plan ( drawing ) of a stand and wood to use. There is some nice timber in the uk so you got lots to choose from, but its not cheap. You might get a steel frame welded and galvanised cheaper. Them just clad it with mdf or what ever you like.

Dallas was that timber in the tri-angle stand sold to you as meranti, from the photo, it looks really light in color for meranti.

Viper i think 25x25 square tubing will work much better and will last for ever, you can make a wood cover to hide the steel work, Thats what i have done and it looks good and is strong.

u can also use 25mm angle iron, then the wood "slides" in and u get the best of wood and steel.

one can also use aluminium trim to hide the joints

the secret with wood is to varnish well using yatch varnish, even when my big tank leaked i have seen no damage with 400L of salt water bathing it
