    Hi all

When looking at the reefs from across the world i have noticed that very few people use steel to build their stands but rather wood. Its very rare to have a wooden stand here in SA. What are the reason that we prefer to use steal over wood?

I suppose it's price. From what I've seen, decent wood is much more than steel and you also need to use more. Wood looks better in my opinion if nicely done.

In the states alot of people have shop class where they learn to work with wood, and Im sure its cheaper for them to just buy the wood and make it themselves instead of getting a steel stand made.

I have a purely wooden tank stand, Ziyaad. I used 2 x very solid pine work-benches from Builder's Warehouse. They have lasted me nearly 4 years, and are stillgoing very very strong!

my biggest concern with timber is deflection over time. i'm scared of my tank splitting as is so i'll be going for steel and timber only for cladding with my stand. (but i tend to be over cautious with somethings and completly wreckless with others.. so ja)

Steel in SA is cheap. Proper wood is expensive.
Also take into account that our pine trees in SA grow a lot faster that the same tree does in Norway for example. Just ask Crispin how old the trees are when they chop them down. When they are the same age we cut them down here in SA, then they are still saplings in Norway. Can still be used as an indoor Christmas tree.
And the faster the tree grow, the softer is the wood. The wider the grain, and it is easier to absorb water.

I agree with Riaan and the others ! Both of my stands are from solid wood ! The end product from solid wood looks much better !;) You have to use thick solid wood and that is expensive ! The third one is from steel .
