Hi all, I am busy planning to build an open top canopy for my tank and Im not sure what wood to get for it. I dont want it to be too heavy and will support 2t5's and 2 MH.

So what is the best wood to use and how many mm is best? I've heard marine plywood is good but expensive. Anybody know the cost?

If pine is coated well using expoxy resin (i think) it will be fine.
But my suggestion would be to spend the extra $$$ and go for ply.

i phoned 2 other places the one quoted for marine ply R800 for 12mm 1.2*2.4 and R600 for 9mm... the other place is more expensive but they suggested i get "external pine plywood" and it goes for R360 for 12mm of same size board.

Anyone know where in joburg i can get better prices for marine ply?

yeah I think if you connect the MH directly onto the wood.I've got a aluminium lighting hood that will house the MH though.I'm planning on only using the chipboard on the four corners. Maybe buy a thin aluminium sheet if your afraid of the wood being affected by the heat

Would one still need to apply sealent etc on the wood?

Not Realy Split Poles! Its your Normal Poles that
you use for Building Lapa's! Full round For the edges
Split in half For the Top Section! Will take some extra
time but Definitley Worth It! Will look like the That
LOG FURNITURE you can Bye! If thats not for you
rather pay the extra Few Bucks and go for the Marine
Ply! Chipboard and Pine Will Worp! Pine Only after A While!

Be careful with them, creosote poison to fish, and the other treatment they use contains cyanide. I believe they are trying to get the stuff banned in the States, as the cyanide leaches out of the wood.

Won't be using the creosote treated poles! Going for
the other treatment and treat that with a water proofing!
