    Hi Guys

I am about to commence construction on my 2.5m by 1m tank.
Please advise where I should be shopping for the wood base.
I am considering marine ply but the prices are shocking.
Are there any viable cost effective alternatives and if so where in Cpt can one get it?

Don't be skimpy when it comes to the base. It's very important. Trust me I know. I learned the hard way.

Flappy - what about multiple layers of shutterply? This is extremely strong - and it's about +-R250 for a sheet at Builders - if you lucky - you sometimes get them at special for R199....

You are correct Flappy , marine ply has just become unbelieveably expensive. But to be honest I have never used Marine Ply.

Good old Pine & a LOT of coats of Marine Varnish but as JD said...sometimes precaution is better than cure !

Yip..thus LOTS of varnish, also difficult to get really straight planks / pieces. While I was working for a joinery I had the planks "dipped" in the same stuff they use top treat window frames (the wooden ones)

when you stay base. I'm assuming it's the wooden top the glass will be placed on? Whats supporting the wood?

Flappy if you have tried the likes of Airtone timbers and still not happy with the price then I would suggest standard ply but I would coat it with nothing less than 2 layers of epoxy or polyester resin nothing else will work better.

Yip thanks,I got prices from Baltic.
Problem is a standard board is 2440 by 1220.As you know I need 2.5 by 1.
They do have an imported marine ply that comes in at 2.5m but as luck would have its almost double the price of regular marine ply

How about something like the 32mm chip board coutertop stuff? and the top is laminated, you might be able to get on piece for the whole tank. have alook at builder hardware.
