Outright banning will send the pet trade underground making matters exponentially worse.
Instead of calling for bans, alternate ideas should be tabled.

I think you may be taking things out of proportion a little bit. :p This campaign is primarily against one single pet shop I think, and from what I can recall, it is well deserved because that particular pet shop has a long history of animal care issues.

I doubt it. These people are all those from the animal sactuaries and friends that know that many stray dogs and cats are put down daily. The puppies in the petshops are often from puppy mills which are bred in terrbile conditions. If petshops don't sell puppies and kittens more strays in shelters will be rehomed before being put to sleep.

I feel it's justified. Dogs in puppy mills are not treated properly. A bunch are put in a cage to breed repeatedly until they are can't breed anymore, then they are discarded or killed. Many have tumours and injuries from the breeding repeatedly which aren't treated and this will continue until people and petshops stop buying puppies from them. Greyhounds are also killed after having their ears chopped off if they don't win races anymore. It's a sick, disgusting trade and it's amazing that some care enough to try do something about it.

True, but a complete ban on all pets is just incredibly stupid. The puppy mills will just find another outlet. They're already selling loads in classifieds/Gumtree etc. These shops just need to be inspected a lot more often and their suppliers verified as registered breeders. If they default then they get fined heavily or shut down. Putting in more legislation is pointless if you can't even police the existing laws.

That's true, but majority of them don't have fish as pets, they are specifically targeting the puppy mills in this instance. I know the group that starts the protests quite well and fish don't cross their minds at all.

No, People will not protest like this unless they need to. Meaning If pet stores keep the fish and coral in decent tanks, kept well, there will be no need to protest against it... :)

More directly, I was surprised to see seasheperd.org has taken an overtly negative stance against marine aquariums. Under their "reef defense" campaign they are calling for the ban in trade ("trafficking") of marine aquarium organisms.

    Is it shocking?

IMO loaded for what one sector wants to here. Like all things, shout loud and you get noticed.

The implications are that sea world have interests in SA.

Just like MR pet has a franchise...

I see soft targets coming under fire in the future.

Yup. And some shadow minister will take up the matter to get votes. :whistling:

And then others will join in on the good sales campaign.

Few will see through the BS.
