A friend and I went diving this weekend and he caught the guy below, anyone can help identify who this guy is? Pics aren't that clear, crappy cellphone camera.

    Google Acanthurus dussumieri.

Will need a better pic to ID properly.
Its not a good idea to take fish out the sea unless you know exactly what they are and if your tank is suitable to keep them.

Acanthurus dussumieri looks really close except for yellow pattern around the eye, plus tail has some white...

thats a juvi, full colour patterns wont show for a while, so from those pics its just guess work, and that fish WILL change color as it matures. what size tank do you have it in, and what are the other tangs in there?

its not in my tank, i am still searching for a decently priced skimmer and T5 lights, in my friends tank, its in a 1.8m L x 600 W x 600 H tank...enough swimming room for now, no other tangs, just a few juvi wrasses and a juvi trigger...

i guess you could call them rare as you wont often see them in tanks, and most unlikely to see them in a pet store, but thats got alot to do with the fact that its illegal to seel wild caught marine ornimental organisms in South Africa, so pet stops wont buy things that people dive out.

but you dont often see them in private tanks (many people catch their own live stock) as they tend to grow fast and large and be a little agro, so for the space they take you could get better more colourful exotic (as in from a foreign country) tang instead.

But lets get a positive id on him first:)

Always remeber 'rare' fish are often fish not seen in the trade, and thats most often because they are not suited to be in our tanks:)
