I think the biggest deciding factor would be the temperature of where you live, those who live in the hotter areas will generally have a to those that live in cooler places.

Another factor would be the power off their lighting.

I use a fan when needed and an open algae scrubber. That cools a tank a lot, but your RO top-up becomes a problem. Must install an auto top-up unit.

Riaan do you use a fan over your ATS or is it in your hood over the water.

Was wondering where i should place them...

I also don't use one. I have one sitting in the garage, but I don't have any place to install it. At the moment I have a fan blowing over my sump. It works very well but obviously requires more RO for topup.

Have one tank with and one tank without. Don't really check the temp much on the tank without though but when the lights come on, fans come on. The one with a chiller only has 1 fan but runs 24/7. Both require ridiculous amounts of RO.

I use 2 x 12cm 220V fans built into my hood to cool the MH's - They also do a nice job of cooling the tank....

I never used to run my tank with a chiller - since we broke up my cold water tank (my wife complained about too little space in the house), I have been using my chiller on my tank. BUT, I still supplement with a fan that is blowing over the surface of the water of my DT!

I found with a chiller a reef tank is more stable and with sps you don't want a temp problems, as with a lot of our corals we keep more stable better growth
