I have some mangroves coming next week. Has anyone here kept them? Any tips? Pics?

I don't expect them to help a whole lot with nutrient export, but I think they are cool looking. I may even eventually try to put them in a pot. For now I'll put them in my sump.

I have 2 in my sump and ummmm, yeah, they have leaves and roots, that's about it. :p I heard they consume magnesium, but I think you would need to have a whole lot in order for them to have any impact on your levels as they are extremely slow growing. They would look really cool in a mud/swamp bio-type system, but apart from that, not really much to write home about. Mine are lit by a 14watt energy saver globe.

Anemone - in South Africa mangroves are a proteched species and thus illegal to own/trade/collect etc without the correct permits

I planted a seed in a pot 2 years ago and it only germinated 6 months ago, so be patient. In a salty environment they develop aireal roots. I pour some skimmate on once in awhile. I have it growing well in well drained soil, but it should obviously be kept damp.

nope. . . Found the seed washed up on the beach. I know that it's technically against the law, but so is driving 70 in a 60 zone.

Henk law is there to protect the wild mangroves from habitat destruction ,do you honestly feel that a few reefers growing one or two plants is any kind of threat to our local mangroves?

How many mangroves are you recieving Brenda? My friend in Florida has quite mangrove garden as part of his reef tanks filtration & removed his skimmer as it was not needed about 3yrs back. His tank has been running for the last 6 or 7 yrs I think & the mangrove garden started about 5yrs back. I'll see if I can get pics of the system from him or when I visit in October then I can take pics.

Oh! I did not know that. They are not illegal to own here. There may be permits that are needed for wild collection. These have not been taken from the wild.

I think 5 are coming. I'll know for sure when they arrive next week. I won't be removing the skimmer.
