Whitespot: Know your enemy

Hey RiaanP, I have a Regal tang for over a year now, and it seems that every now and then it tends to get some spots. A reefer visited me the other day and confirmed that it is white spot (his opinion).

Could it be something other than white spot, and if not, is it common for "mild outbreaks" to occur. It never seems ill, eats like a beast and I never saw any reason to be concerned.

Seeing that you are such a helpful and patient guy (and a ghuru on white spot) I just thought I'd ask.

Thanks;)

when does he get these outbreaks? how often do you introduce new fish?

As the cysts are in your tank, they just keep on with their life cycle. Seems most of your fish are now immune. hopefully eventually the strain you got will die out.

The Regal got it about three times over the last year, very mild. I can't think of a pattern. At first I was scared senseless, but when nothing happened I thought that it was something else.
I read your article and realized that it could be the cycle. I don't add much fish, I am careful to maintain the peace and it's rather the exception than the rule in a month.(1,6m tank with 14 fish)
The last occurrence on the Regal was after a friend gave me a butterfly and I didn't qt!!! Now the Regal and butterfly has spots.

I bought a bottle of Herbtana and I think the system will be better off. I don't like all sorts of chemicals - rather go the natural route.
Both look better already.

Thanks for the response.

Not sure this one is covered in this thread.

This bit of info in the article is very interesting. @carlosdeandrade

Use of ultraviolet (UV) sterilization to kill theronts
has been suggested, based on research involving Ichthy- ophthirius multifiliis (freshwater “ich”). The recommended UV dose for Ichthyophthirius theronts is 100,000 μWsec/ cm2 (Hoffman 1974). However, UV doses required for Cryptocaryon irritans are anecdotal or extrapolated, and range from 280,000 μWsec/cm2 (industry numbers) to 800,000 μWsec/cm2 (Colorni and Burgess 1997).

Really nice writeup here. I do in fact feel more prepared to handle a whitespot outbreak/infection.

Hi riaan how would one dose the antimalarial drugs or Nitroimidazoles. Can it be dosed when the fish are in the water and what dosages should be dosed?

Never done anti-malaria drugs for whitespot. As far as I know, its more effective for velvet.

Why if i was so carefull and strict about qt and my fallow tank. After 4 weeks of qt and preventive medication i introduced lavender and scopas tang in my tank my angel went for scopas abit and this morning there it is again white spots. I just dont understand i even qt corals and dip them. Any ideas

How long is the Tomonts stage?

If you did not apply the bucket method, and thereafter moved them to a certain clean tank, then you still have whitespot within the environment.

Ok so what now. Cant belive that it survived the medication in qt but what next i cant remove all fish for another 12 weeks.

Where is your QT tank? How far away from main system?

Best is to have it remote to limit cross infection. Using same net absentmindedly. Feeding QT then main tank, dipping hand into the water.

Qt is in garage always washed hands worked on main tank first before qt never used nets in main tank.

Quick question - I had whitespot in my tank and the only fish that survived was my Clarki clown.

After the whitespot he was in the tank for about month and a half but did not show any symptoms but I still removed him and put him in a quarantine tank.

He has been in the quarantine tank for just over a month and haven't shown any symptoms.

I intend to keep him in quarantine tank for one more month still and then the display tank will be free of fish for +- 2 months.

My question is: If after the month he did not show any sign of whitespot can I return him to the display tank and is there a possibility that if I add new fish that they can get whitespot from him?

Not from him. But from the shop yes.
QT the new fish please.
