Hello all, I just registered now so still very new. I have a qeustion hope someone can help, been surfing the net, but no luck. I have seen this morning on the bottom and attached to the side of my tank a white silky cocoon, like spiders make. Is this fungi of rotten food particle or ?

It is about 2 cm by 2 cm dome like shape, white and silky.

Hope this is enough info to make a calculated identification. The tank is about 2 months old, 3 fish, one tube worm, one anemone and a large piece of polyp rock and live rock.

    Thanks.

    Jano

hi jano welcome to masa:) great to have you join its a wonmderful place to lean about marines:)

can you give us a little background into your historey of marines and what sort of tank you have? i am sure masa can give you some great advice but a little more info on what you have and how its put together would really help:)

i am a little concerned though as its a rule of thumb that a nennie shouldnt be added to a tank thats under 6 months old. this is for a number of reasons, one being the reefers knowledge into careing for an anenome and more important the stability of the water parameters, especially through the nitrogen cycles. That nennie shouldnt be in that tank (in my view) and they are seen to be 'advanced care' creatures. Alot of people make a similar mistake and perhaps we can help you look after it, especially if the water and lights are not perfectly suited to the nennie.

what sort of lights do you have above the tank?

sorry to focus on a negative aspect on your first post, but its best to get bad news early so that we can maybe help with it :)

i think we really need a pic fore a propper id of the organism you are referring to, but it sounds like a filter feeder and i dont think its particularly harmful to the tank, indeed i think its probably a good sign :) but a pic would help alot.

welcome to the forum and happy posting :)

Thanks all for the advice, I did stop at the shop from whom I bought it, they also said sponge.
With regards to the anemone being in a tank thats only 3 months old, I will take it up with them, seeing they helped me set up the system from the start.

    Thanks for all your replies.

    Welcome to MASA!!!!

Yip it's a sponge, I queried it a few days back, they are filter feeders, same as you couldn't find it on the net.

good to hear that you will; question them, the LFS answers we get here is often amusing reading :whistling: Lets have a second look at the tank you ahve so that we can see what sort of setup they have envisaged for that nennie ok :) always good to get a second opinion and we do it with no vested interest in your wallet, which unfortuantly is what motivates many lfs's :(

:) I found that if you read the whole thread then you learn more than just skipping, some times some stuff triggers your mind and then you remember, ah, I wondered about that;)

    Welcome to MASA Jano!

As Crispin already stated, anemones don't usually do well in new tanks. Please let me know if you need help with the anemone.
