Does anyone know where i can find red gracilaria. Its for a refugium. I dont like using cheato because the pods tear it apart and make a huge mess...

Difficult to prune without breaking the runners. And i heard that they can go sexual and wipeout a tank. And with my luck...

They release spored into the tank when nutrients get too low, its like they commit suicide and go out with a big bang

Survival mode, similar to aiptasia ? Ok so my question still stands as to how that could wipe out a tank

Maybe my pods were underfed or very aggro! Back to my question, does anyone know where to find gracilaria?

From what i understand...they release all the nutrients they were storing, when they die. Nitrates, amonia etc

Hi Fishman, i have heard and cant confirm that the abalone farmers in hermanus grow a species of gracilaria to feed the perlemoen perhaps you could google and contact them, it is not a common macroalgae amongst hobbyists

Ok makes sense, but I would imagine you need A LOT of the stuff for it even to be a small issue. A good sized (well set up) tank can easily handle the load if something happens. Shout if u want a few pieces in future...

agreed it is the best harvested food for abalone besides Kelp and Olva to be fed to abalone BUT.. i doubt it would survive in our systems unless collected from a warmer water sorce (assuming your tank is tropical?)

that being said if you dive and find Abalone (which is becomeing scarce these days) you will more than likley find them sitting in a patch of it.. they very rarely drift far from a food sorce...

on the up side i have seen Gracilaria grow fin waters as cols as the western cape (11-13 deg to as warm as the transkei coas 18-24deg).

may i ask why not use chaeto? it is far more available and serves the purpose than gracillaria...

That is correct, they do grow it to feed the abalone. I have tried the species they use in my tank and it never coped with the higher temps.

I have feather calaurpa, chaeto, mangrove an other types of macro algae in my fuge, wen I prune ,specially calaurpa,I purposefully throw it in DT an my tangs just love it to bits lol.... So as for going sexual, I thing my tangs will wipe it out b4 then lol..... U should prune atleast once a mnth to prevent death of algae tho, as pruning allows rapid new growths to consume further nutrients
