I was wondering if there are butterflyfish regularly seen around the point in Mossel bay and if not where in the general area of Mossel bay can i collect butterflies close to shore

Hi I dont know if you are still looking for locals, but juveniles appear from Plett to StillBay for a brief period - normally the last 2 weeks of January to the first two weeks of February. Some years there are no fish due to the cold water, in other years there may be a good variety. I like to keep butterflyfish, and over the years I have caught marleyi, blackburnii, dolosus, lunula, vagabundus, auriga, kleinii and heniochus. But you never know. Best to befriend someone in that area, and ask them to check the rock pools during the peak period (as above). If there are sergeant majors or spotdamsels in the rockpools you are ready to go. Take your mask and snorkel.

Good day, from my experience diving in Mossel Bay, they are not very common and only active during the summer months (Best time to have a look is from Late December to end February as this is generally the period when the water is the warmest). Best places to have a look are the reef with the name fluffy but you need to access the reef by boat and need scuba gear, or you can try the reef accessible from Santos Beach.
