You need it for sterilising things or do you have a more evil-scientist type plan for it?

Not Really! Sodium HypoChloride is the "fancy" name for Jik. Sodium thiosulphate is normally used as a chlorine neutralizer. Maybe @finch can tell us what he wants to do with it!!

PE chemicals or Protea Chemicals would be my starting point - both in Deal Party IIRC.

basically to treat sw is as follows...

    collect
    filter with micron cloth
add chlorine till tests 10ppm. (unscented bleach is fine)
airate for 12-24 hours then test for chlorine.
if ppm is low then repeat chlorination till 10ppm.
pump air for 12-24 hours again.
test for chlorine again.note airing the water also lowers cl
then add the sodium thio (dissolved in water) till cl ppm is 0.
then you can use it. It may be cloudy so carcoal filtering is an option, but not neccesarry.

Kewl. Will keep an eye out. will be interesting to see what test kits and dosages work for you. Also interested in how ammonia, nitrate and phos will be dealt with from the die off if any.

yep that is a possibility. the idea is to let it sit a while, and have he water made well in advance. then the sediments will collect at the bottom.
then when its time to use it, you syphon the clear water off while not disturbing the sediments.

its seems long winded, but its waaaay cheaper than salt mix, and an excuse to go to the sea when collecting.

just an update if anyone is interested.

so ive been strugling to get my sodium thiosulphate for a while now. in the mean time ive gotten impatient with waiting for the chlorine to naturally leave the system. i thought a while about what else can i use...
so i thought lets try bicarb. the oto test turned blue ! i wasnt sure if that was a good result so i abandoned that. (i think the blue result indicates 'free chlorine' which is still in the system i.e. not absorbed into any form of precipitate)

then i thought a bit more... what loves chlorine? calcium ! so i wacked a couple of crushed egg shells in a liter of water and in 5 min the oto test went from bright yellow to very very pale yellow !
a few fresh shells after that, some stiring and the test shows 0 chlorine !

now my DT is crystal clear and running a second batch of eggshell. the first lot of eggshell pong of chlorine ! like a swimming pool !
    ph remained unchanged at 8.2

Intresting! I'm sure you can use Peroxide as a chlorine neutralizer Aswell.
