I am re-thinking my sump setup. Do have a DSB but was wondering "What is better a DSB or live rock". Is live rock not the better option for filtration and a stable system.

Both, but separate. And plenty flow on the rocks..... IMHO. conceptually. :p

this would depend on what the aim of the sump is. ammonia/nitrite or nitrate removal? or both...

either way i would say the 2 should be seperate as the DSB needs its surface to be open in order for it to work optimally.. placing the rock over it will cause dead spots and possibly lead to decay in areas of the DSB.. and ultimatley phosphate and GHA

the LR used (if dense enough) could replace the need for a DSB, i personally feel it will be the better option of the 2 and will servive ammonia nitrite and nitrate removal.. and being in the sump and darkness would stop corraline from colonising on the rock rendering it less effiecient..

Isn't this just a DSB with a obviously seperate cryptic zone? I'm sure this is best of both worlds?

I would say a remte dsb. One can control the flow you want which would a very slow flow. Also having it in a tray or bucket better so it can be removed if ever you have to. Caulerpa also excellent for nutrient export.

Thx for all the input. I must say I like the remote dsb idea. Will perhaps remove the dsb in sump to remote dsb and replace the spot in sump with live rock. This way I have both, thus increasing my live rock and retaining the dsb.
