This is the mechanical equivalent of a DSB. It is fed by a slow trickle of water. By the time the water reaches the end of the device, all oxygen have been used up and the bacteria need to obtain other means of "breathing". The bacteria breaks down the NO3 to do this. Thus no mor NO3 no more nitrates.

Things are a bit more complicated than explained above, but that is the simple lowdown version.

Hi Trad - no - If you already have a DSB, I would not get one.... Waste of money. Unless you have problems with very high nitrates, I would definitely NOT get this....

Provided there is sufficient live rock and water changes are in the region of 10% a week, nitrates are not an issue, so no i wouldn`t see the need for one.

i know Cassim at Julies pets just hooked up one on his system and really pleased with the results.but i personally feel that if you have a decent DSB and keep up with proper husbandry,it isnt necessary IMO

They definitely work. A long tube also works though... Even a bucket of sand works...

From my travels of seeing other setup's, it looks like you could almost run a tank without skimmer, LR, DSB and maybe even water :whistling:
