Hi found this in my tank last night

It seems to dig a hole under the rock.

Dont know how long its been in the tank but I have seen sand flying out from under the rock with no explanation ?? lol

Sorry about the bad pic but this morning I could not seen him anymore because there was a pile of sand between the glass and his hole.

Could it be some kind of pistol shrimp

PS he has one big claw and one smaller one?

    Thank you
    Brandon

Looks like a pistol shrimp. Do you hear a cracking noise from time to time?

    Wow that was quick

I only hear the astrea snail...
and then the controller switching sometimes...
last night I heard that cracking noise (like when you crack your fingers) for the first time ... I think usually I just think is the controller that clicks

The tank is next to my bed so I hear alot of things at night

Could it have come with the Live Rock???

Its not a very nice color green/brown... how do I get it out. Id rather get a nicer one and then a goby...

Brandon, I would not take it out? Why?

Could very easily have come with the LR, as do mantis shrimps and the odd nasty hitch hiking crab

    Thanks for the quick reply

had lotsa nasty crabs, but no mantis so far (i pray never) but my fathers tank been running 14 months and already had 3 mantis... struggling to get the 4th one out now

I thought I would rather take him out and move him to my fathers tank where he would have more space... and he is not that pretty, I thought about getting a nicer one but decided I dont have enough space for him (maybe when I am allowed to upgrade I will get one)

 It can be bit disturbing when you first hear it.

You can try use the glass trick to catch him, put a piece of food in the bottom of the glass, place the glass at a slight downward angle with the top of the glass as close to his home as possible, leave it overnight and hopefully he will come out and get trapped in the glass.

Hey decided that I want this baby to go, for the following reasons...

1 I am scared he will kill my new small cleaner shrimp

2 I am worried that he and my coral banded will fight

3 I would rather put him in a bigger tank where he has more space and a goby friend (planning on getting a goby but not the point)

4 The sounds still... REALLY freaks me out,:2eek: esspecially when he does it a few times at night ( I am scared he is chopping my cleaner shrimp up.

5 the sound is still freaky :scared:

So does anyone have any ideas on how to catch it...

will the glass thing work, wont they be able to swim out or arent they like normal shrimps??

    Thanks
    Brandon

The glass trick could work, has for some peeps before.

Otherwise u could sit with a fish trap with a trap door like i did with a mantis, but this could take some serious time!!!

Otherwise you could try unpacking the rock and catching him with a net...... but a mission.

    Get im a silencer....

use coke bottle traps, I have taken millions out my tank. Or if he is under one piece of rock, surround it with nets, then lift it up, it does the trick, but you have to be quick.

I caught the shrimp last week when I redid my scaping ... it fell out of the net back into the tank, and disappeared ... there were no rocks in the tank, when he fell in could he have gone under the substrate?

Anyway he is still alive since I can hear him.

I think I should leave him in there till I upgrade then when I move all my rocks over, I will catch him again and move him to my dads future 3.2 which will be up by then...

    Thanks.

    Brandon
