Hi, as some of you might know, I started a pod tank the other day. Last night I added some LR from my DT sump and found this on the rock. Can anyone tell me what it is. ID 1.jpg
There are more of them on the rock and not all have the tube sticking out of it.

if you are referencing to the tube like things that is probably just spaghetti worms tubes. if to the sponge like thingy, well it looks like a sponge, filter feeder

The thin tube like structure are feather worms. What I would like to have identified is the translucent tube protruding from the sponge like structure in the red encircled area. In the blue circled area is the same sponge like structure without the translucent tube.

Those are actually tunicates. They are most primitive of all vertebrates. The tube is actually the inlet siphon which is actually made up of a primitive spinal column. Great to have in your tank they are great filter feeders.

Another picture, some of the sponge type structures have tubes and other don't. Maybe I broke them off when I removed the LR from the sump.

Just leave it they like dark areas & are awesome filter feeders. Actually a sign of a healthy mature tank.

I hope there are some left in my DT tank sump, seeing that this piece of LR came from there. The tubes are very delicate, after placing the LR in the pod tank I saw one of the translucent tube floating around. The attachment to the "body" must be very weak.

not the same species i know but the procedure could be similar. wonder what would happen if you take that piece that broke of and try and mount it to the rock. maybe something will grow

Dude the grow on everything glass, rock & sometimes on the heater so no need to stress as they will be in the sump. You will have some die off but will recover.

So I take it that they are quite comman in marine aquariums. The pod tank is running on a HOB filter rated at 400l/h and a small Seio 320 flow pump rated at 1200l/h. Temp is sitting at 25 C. Do I need to add more filtration.

They are common yes especially in darker areas. That should be fine for the pod tank, do you have cheato in the tank? Cheato will help the pod population but it does need light.

I did add a small ball of Cheato, pinned it under the piece of LR to keep it from flying around the tank. A small fluorescent lamp has been added to help it grow.

Those 50w down lights works the best for cheatomorpha & will grow quicker with that light.

If the cheato is left to float free it will get stuck in the filter and flow pump inlet.

if you have an extra compartment in the sump then put it in there. where all the other pieces of LR is in the sump area. should be fine in there
