Hi Jacques - is this critter "hairy" when underwater? This LOOKS like a hairy gorilla crab - but it could possibly be a jewel crab or coral crab as well.

In the case of gorilla crab - you would want to get it out of your tank, because it will most likely hunt and kill your fish, during the night times.

    Coral crabs are usually harmless.

These are "hitch-hikers" within live rock, and they only come out after a few weeks in our tanks.

Please see the following URL for "live rock hitch-hikers":

Come to think of it (and after I had a look on that URL as well) - I am QUITE sure that this is a red mithrax crab.

given the stubby and squat appearance i would go with a gorilla crab, its a predator as Jacquesb mentioned, put it in your sump

    100% Gorilla crab

Judging by that 'live rock' (it's actually dead porites coral skeleton) and that you are in Cape Town, I assume you bought the 'rock' from Sams.

Had the same experience and got a crab exactly the same as this.
Evil bastards.. sump it or dump it ;)
