I thought it would be useful for beginners and hobbyists alike if we got together and compiled a list of everything we have in our aquariums and a short description of what it does.

    For example;

Heater - helps to maintain a warm temperature in the aquarium

So come on, join in, everyone make a post about one item that they use and add a simple description of what it does.

Once the list is long enough I'll put it all together in a searchable article or a sticky thread or something. We can do hardware, supplements, plumbing, anything. :) I'll start...

Is it possible to also add the downside, if any, with the Product a person is going to be Posting about...I for one know that excessive use of activated carbon can strip water of trace elements..the "dangers" of not following Instructions of certain Products should be brought to their attention...

Yeah, the iPad bit is subjective, but the connection to MASA is a mountain of information.

This thread look good as does the calculator and other links put together buy the Admin.

Not to discourage, but to promote the many features available on MASA. I often see members pointing reefers to other sites. Yes I am a culprit as well. Going OT here but I think it important that the benefit of this thread, and the many other wonderful features used, do not just become a data space sponge.

Great idea and will put together a list of things we find usefull in the installation and maintenance field.

Biopellets: a solid source of carbon for the reduction of phosphate and nitrate via bacterial action. It comes in a variety of sizes. It can be use in a biopellet reactor for best action or in a filter bag.

NOPOX : a product made by Redsea. It is a way of soluble carbon dosing to stimulate bacterial growth to reduce nitrate and phosphate. It should be dosed daily as prescribed with a good protein skimmer in the same system.

    Protein Skimmer

A protein skimmer or foamfraction is a device used mostly in saltwater tank to remove organic compounds from the water before they break down into nitrogenious waste

    Live rock

Live rock is basically old coral skeleton that have broken off the main reef . It is labeled 'live' because of the multitude of living organisms that can be found on and within it. Typical organisms found are: bacteria; worms; crustaceans (crabs, shrimps); sponges; cnidarians (soft corals, hard corals); red (including coralline algae), brown, and green algae (both micro and macro); gastropods (snails); mollusks (clams, nudibranchs); and echinoderms (starfish, brittle stars).

It is preferential to utilise live rock in a reef aquarium because it can fulfill three functions; biological filtration, support structure, and assist in providing a more complete and natural ecosystem.

Because of the highly porous nature of the live rock then a large surface area is provided for bacteria to populate

Using live rock provides a perfect, natural structure for all the reef organism to live on, within and around

Deep Sand Bed, provide filtration for your system. Plus great place for other critters that would be eaten by your fish, like copepods, various types of worms etc.

ATO = Auto Top Off Unit

Used to replace water lost from aquaruim due to evaporation

downside - float switches can become clogged and not shut off causing ro water to be dumped in your tank till the pump runs dry causing your salinity to drop depending on how much water is in top off chamber

    Automatic feeder.
For feeding the fish so you do not have to rely on someone else to try and remember them when you are not at home.
Can feed six times daily. Also handy if you want to feed at midday, but not possible, since you have to work to maintain your little glass box :)

Downside - Have to remember to keep it filled up, and remember to check that the battery is still ok.
